Nirwan Ansari ’82, a pioneer in the field of communications whose research on telecoms networks formed part of the backbone for broadband access and later FIOS networks, has been named a 2019 Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

Bipin Rajendran, an engineer who develops computing systems that aim to match the efficiency seen in nature by studying the organizational principles of the brain, has been elected a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

NAI Senior Members are active faculty, scientists and administrators “who have demonstrated remarkable innovation-producing technologies that have brought or aspire to bring, real impact on the welfare of society,” according to the Academy. They have also proved successful in patenting, licensing and commercializing their inventions.

Throw on any iconic rock album from the mid-1970’s to early 1980’s, and chances are, you’ll hear the distinct sound of pitch-shifting and harmonizing effects that were just beginning to revolutionize how records were being produced — from the rhythm instruments on David Bowie’s 1975 album “Young Americans”, to the arena-sized choruses of AC/DC’s “Back In Black”, to the signature double-tracked tones of Eddie Van Halen’s finger-blistering guitar work in his band’s 1978 debut album, “Van Halen”. 

For the latest in a series of eloquent centennial-year tributes to its traditions and people, a record crowd of more than 250 flocked to Newark College of Engineering’s 21st annual Salute to Engineering Excellence, held last night at the Park Avenue Club in Florham Park.

“What we’ve achieved at NJIT is on the bedrock of NCE – the oldest and largest college of the university,” President Joel Bloom noted at the evening’s outset.
