Author and Artist Michael Benson On Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey", and Fusing Science and Art
Monday, June 11, 2018
In 1964, legendary director Stanley Kubrick met with legendary science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke to embark on one of the most ambitious films ever made — “2001: A Space Odyssey”. In a 141-minute cinematic spectacle that would take four years to produce, the two artists uniquely blended aspects of science and art to create a groundbreaking futuristic mythology that is still studied in film schools and debated by global audiences today. Half a century later, contemporary writer, filmmaker and artist Michael Benson, has authored a new and critically acclaimed account of...

NJIT Offers New Jersey's First Undergraduate Forensic Science Program
Wednesday, June 6, 2018
This fall, NJIT has announced it will launch its highly anticipated Forensic Science Bachelor of Science degree program — a unique program designed for undergraduate students interested in the rapidly expanding fields of forensic science and crime scene investigation. The 120-credit degree will represent New Jersey’s only undergraduate forensic science degree, and the first baccalaureate degree program in the New York metropolitan region designed from the outset to achieve approval by the main accrediting body in college-level forensic science academics, the Forensic...

New Jersey's Future Chemists Compete for Glory In Thirty-Third Annual Chemistry Olympics
Thursday, May 31, 2018
On May 22, 2018, NJIT hosted more than 300 of Northern New Jersey’s most exceptional high school chemists as they competed for academic glory in the Thirty-Third Annual New Jersey Chemistry Olympics. The Olympics — organized by NJIT's Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science and the North Jersey Section of the American Chemical Society (NJACS) — brought together more than 28 student teams from 18 high schools, meeting to match wits in an afternoon of competitive research events, science communication challenges and live lab competitions. Additional funding was...
Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array Reveals New Insights into Solar Flares' Explosive Energy Releases
Thursday, May 24, 2018
Last September, a massive new region of magnetic field erupted on the Sun’s surface next to an existing sunspot. The powerful collision of magnetic fields produced a series of potent solar flares, causing turbulent space weather conditions at Earth. These were the first flares to be captured, in their moment-by-moment progression, by NJIT’s recently expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA). With 13 antennas now working together, EOVSA was able to make images of the flare in multiple radio frequencies simultaneously for the first time. This enhanced ability to peer...
NJIT Grad is Now a Medicolegal Death Investigator
Tuesday, May 22, 2018
For some, the work of a professional “death investigator” might sound like something straight out of “Law & Order” and “CSI.” However, for Carly Berdan ’18, that job will soon be a very real career. With her graduate coursework completed, Berdan will soon wrap up her master’s thesis at NJIT this summer, leaving with a M.S. in biology and advanced expertise in forensic science. That experience and training has helped land Berdan the distinct and important role of medicolegal death investigator, examining suspicious and unusual deaths for the Northern Regional State...
Graduates Share Diverse Success Stories Across Science and Liberal Arts
Tuesday, May 22, 2018
This spring, NJIT’s 2018 College of Science and Liberal Arts Awards honored an exclusive group of its undergraduate and graduate seniors with the CSLA Outstanding Student Award — a distinction annually given to students who have demonstrated the highest level of excellence in their field. We caught up with four of the college’s most exceptional senior students selected for the award to let them reflect on their time at NJIT and share what the future holds for them after graduation. Meet CSLA’s 2018 “Outstanding Student” Seniors: Xinglei Liu ’18, Ph.D. in Chemistry Where...
NJIT's 102nd Commencement Continues at the WEC
Friday, May 18, 2018
Following its 102nd commencement ceremony May 16 at the Prudential Center in Newark, which recognized undergraduate and doctoral students, NJIT continued the festivities at its new Wellness and Events Center (WEC) yesterday and today. There, the university conferred degrees to master’s students from all five academic schools. The occasions marked not only an educational milestone for the graduates, but also the first time commencement was held at the WEC. Agrim Sachdeva, who earned a master’s in information systems, and Jacob Weiss, a master’s in architecture graduate, served as student...
Chemical-Feasting Bacteria Provide New Key for Removing 'Likely Carcinogen' from Contaminated Water
Tuesday, May 15, 2018
While not featured on most product ingredient labels, the organic chemical stabilizer and manufacturing byproduct, 1,4-dioxane, can be found in countless everyday household items — from shampoos and cosmetics to laundry detergents and antifreeze. Partly due to its widespread use over many decades, the chemical has now been implicated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an “emerging contaminant of concern” at groundwater and drinking water sites across the U.S., with no effective method for its removal yet established. Now, scientists at New Jersey Institute of...
