A Mathematician Takes Aim at Gunk
Thursday, March 22, 2018
Some industrial processes seem to resist optimization. Filters impervious to the slings and arrows of accumulated “gunk” – the particles, minerals and organic buildup that foul water treatment facilities, nuclear power plants and even breweries – are prime among them. And that’s where the mathematicians come in. “Several of my colleagues at NJIT are designing new membrane technologies. I focus on how membrane filters foul up,” says Linda Cummings, a professor of applied mathematics. “The goal is to design a membrane microstructure that will maximize a filter’s lifetime and minimize the...
One Year In, East Orange Shines as 'Future Ready' Exemplar of Digital Learning
Wednesday, March 21, 2018
Paulette Salomon distinctly recalls April of 2016 as a critical point in her school district’s journey to provide the right digital learning resources and opportunities to the students of East Orange, New Jersey — a district where she has been an educator for 22 years, and has served as the educational technology supervisor to approximately 600 teachers and 10,000 students since 2010. “Our acting superintendent at the time, Gloria Watson, had just learned about the Future Ready program at a summit for local mayors prior to the program being launched,” said Salomon. “She had...
"Doing More with Less" Conference Explores Innovative Responses to Environmental Sustainability
Friday, March 16, 2018
The Murray Center for Women in Technology at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will hold a one-day Women Designing the Future conference—“The Environment: Doing More with Less”—on Friday, March 23. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the university’s Campus Center Ballrooms A and B. Conference participants will have opportunities to interact with women scientists, government leaders, entrepreneurs and social justice activists as they outline the near-future challenges posed by accelerating climate change, including disaster preparedness and basic food and water security....
NJIT Promotes Digital Readiness Across NJ Educational System
Friday, March 9, 2018
In February, more than 300 educators, superintendents, technology advisors and engaged citizens from districts throughout New Jersey convened at NJIT to promote digital education at the 2018 Future Ready Schools New Jersey (FRS-NJ) North Regional Certification Summit. As the first of three regional summits — each sponsored by OnCourse Systems for Education — the FRS-NJ north regional summit celebrated a successful inaugural year for the certification program as New Jersey’s leading initiative to grow digital learning environments across the state’s educational system. The event also...
5 NJIT Students Selected as 2018 Governor's STEM Scholars
Tuesday, March 6, 2018
Five NJIT students — Ivan Mitevski, Kiera Nissen, Omar Qari, Priya Rajbabu and Michael Vitti — have been named 2018 Governor’s STEM Scholars, an honor that is providing them with unique opportunities to learn from and network with New Jersey STEM professionals, research organizations, academic institutions and state policymakers. They join their fellow scholars from universities, high schools and academies throughout New Jersey in attending STEM conferences and field trips, and in participating in a team-based research project. Established in 2013, the Governor’s STEM Scholars...
In the Heights Musical opens on Wednesday, February 28
Monday, February 26, 2018
The Rutgers-Newark/NJIT Theatre and Arts Technology program presents “In the Heights”, a Tony Award- winning musical with lyrics by Lin Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegria Hudes and directed by Michael Kerley, associate director of the theatre program. Using Afro Latino and rap music directed by Robert Felstein and Gonzalo Valencia and Latino-styled dancing choreographed by Jacob Toth, “In the Heights” tells the story of a small Hispanic community in Washington Heights on the brink of change when the younger generation must decide whether to deviate from tradition or go back to their...
NJIT Showcases History of Science and Engineering with 'Distributed Technology Museum'
Tuesday, February 13, 2018
On the third floor of Fenster Hall, visitors can find a rich collection of landmark science and engineering artifacts that resemble a technological time capsule of the past 100 years. The iconic 1984 Apple Macintosh Plus, a 1950s suitcase-type Geiger counter, a 1954 wood-encased Seederer-Kohlbusch scale and 1947 Bausch & Lomb optical microscope — all historical scientific equipment once used at NJIT that is now being protected and displayed as part of university’s growing museum project, called the “NJIT Distributed Technology Museum.” The project, started by NJIT professors Robert B....

Detecting Early-Stage Disease with Molecular Tracking Probes
Tuesday, February 6, 2018
A sudden proliferation of new blood vessels inside the body can bode well or poorly for a patient. If recovering from a wound, the faster new networks form the better. But an unusual growth spurt can also signal the presence of an aggressive cancer. Kevin Belfield is developing minimally invasive methods to monitor both: the pace at which wounds heal and the effectiveness of therapies that inhibit the expansion of blood vessels that feed cancerous growth. His probes, which use molecular tracking devices, aim to improve targeting selectivity, homing in exclusively on new blood vessels to...
Metro-Area Teachers Discover New Ways of 'Launching Students Into Physics'
Friday, January 26, 2018
Physics teachers and STEM educators throughout the metropolitan area gathered at NJIT’s Campus Center Atrium this month as Gordon Thomas, professor of physics and NJIT “Excellence in Teaching” awardee, presented “Launching Students Into Physics” — a workshop aimed at helping pre-college teachers and communicators better engage students in all-things physics. The event provided an opportunity for community educators to participate in fun, inexpensive and interactive teaching techniques and lab experiments that they can use to prepare today’s students for physics at the college level, and...
