NJIT Scientists Measure the Evolving Energy of a Solar Flare's Explosive First Minutes
Toward the end of 2017, a massive new region of magnetic field erupted on the Sun’s surface next to an existing sunspot. The powerful collision of magnetic energy produced a series of potent solar flares, causing turbulent space weather conditions at Earth. These were the first flares to be captured, in their moment-by-moment progression, by NJIT’s then recently opened Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) radio telescope.
Discovery Reveals How Remora Fishes Know When to Hitch a Ride Aboard Their Hosts
Remoras are among the most successful marine hitchhikers, thanks to powerful suction discs that allow them to stay tightly fastened to the bodies of sharks, whales and other hosts despite incredible drag forces while traveling through the ocean. But how do these suckerfish sense the exact moment when they must “stick their landing” and board their speedy hosts in the first place?
A team of biologists at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Friday Harbor Labs at University of Washington (FHL-UW) and The George Washington University (GWU) now offers an answer.
Composting and WEC Solar Panels to Lead Campus Sustainability Efforts in 2020
A solar array atop the Wellness and Events Center, plus a food waste recycling effort, are the first two major sustainability projects underway as part of NJIT's commitment to sustainability in the recently adopted 2025 strategic plan.
NJIT also recently became a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, joining several other institutions in New Jersey and nationwide which are deeper into their sustainability journeys.
NJIT, Ocean County College Expand and Renew Transfer Agreement
A new two-year agreement between Ocean County College and New Jersey Institute of Technology allows OCC graduates to transfer directly into NJIT colleges.
The agreement went into effect on October 4, 2019 and covers NJIT's College of Science and Liberal Arts; Newark College of Engineering; Martin Tuchman School of Management; and Ying Wu College of Computing.
NJIT to Launch New Programs in Cell and Gene Therapy
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in collaboration with New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), an NJIT corporation, has announced it will soon offer both a Professional Science Masters (PSM) degree program and professional graduate certificate in the rapidly expanding field of cell and gene therapy.
CSI: NJIT On the Scene, Young Investigators Train Up in Crime Scene Forensics
Where were you the night of Nov. 26th?
Anyone exiting the Summit Street parking garage that evening would have most certainly been counted among the witnesses to a brightly-lit, taped-off scene surrounding a faded-white ’98 Chevy Lumina where an investigation was underway — carried out by a special unit of NJIT’s own CSI students-in-training.
NJIT Opens State-of-the-Art Nanoelectronics Fabrication Facility
Sagnik Basuray is developing a device the size of a dollar coin that will detect cancer biomarkers in patients in remission by sampling a tiny drop of blood with a dip stick. His sensor is groundbreaking not only in its simplicity, but also in its portability. It’s meant to be used at home.
NJIT to Open State-of-the-Art Facility to Fabricate Nanoelectronic Devices and Sensors
NJIT Unveils State-of-the-Art Facility to Fabricate Nanoelectronic Devices and Sensors
What: Ribbon-Cutting for NJIT’s Microfabrication Innovation Center, followed by a tour of the facility
When: 11 a.m., December 5, 2019
16-Million-Year-Old Fossil Shows Springtails Hitchhiking on Winged Termite
When trying to better the odds for survival, a major dilemma that many animals face is dispersal — being able to pick up and leave to occupy new lands, find fresh resources and mates, and avoid intraspecies competition in times of overpopulation.
For birds, butterflies and other winged creatures, covering long distances may be as easy as the breeze they travel on. But for soil-dwellers of the crawling variety, the hurdle remains: How do they reach new, far-off habitats?
NJIT Math Prof. Shang Seeks Proof For Why Machine Learning Works
Programmers can tell you what machine learning does and how it works, but they can't really prove why it works. Enter the mathematicians.
The what and how of machine learning are well documented — it's software that examines big data to find meaning and possibly suggest actions, based on looking for patterns and complicated statistics — and now NJIT mathematics professor Zuofeng Shang is among a small group of researchers worldwide who want to understand and document the underlying mathematical principles of it.
