NJIT Biologist Explores Ant Colonies, Human Migration With DARPA Award
Thursday, October 24, 2019
Can ants help predict the complex dynamics of future humanitarian crises, such as when and where large populations might move during disease outbreaks or armed conflicts? It’s a question that has been posed by Simon Garnier, assistant professor of biological sciences at NJIT, who recently joined the exclusive company of up-and-coming researchers in the nation with a prestigious 2019 Young Faculty Award from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The DARPA Young Faculty Award (YFA) recognizes “rising stars” in junior faculty positions at academic...
Pre-College STEM Forum Focuses on Forensic Science
Friday, October 18, 2019
NJIT’s Center for Pre-College Programs (CPCP) hosted its third annual STEM School Leadership Forum Oct. 3 on the university’s campus. The free networking event brings together superintendents and other education professionals to discuss how best to expand and enhance science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) instruction in secondary schools. Following breakfast and welcome remarks from CPCP Executive Director Jacqueline Cusack, attendees heard from keynote speaker David Fisher, a former forensic scientist at the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and now...
NJIT Scientists Aim to Triple the Life of Batteries Used in Everyday Appliances
Wednesday, October 16, 2019
Scientists at NJIT have developed high-capacity, printable-on-demand batteries for everyday appliances that are designed to last nearly three times as long as those currently on store shelves. Traditional AA and AAA cells have capacities of around 300 milliampere hours per gram (mAh/g), a measure of how long a battery will hold a charge. In results published earlier this year in the journal Energy Storage Materials, researchers Zhiqian Wang and Somenath Mitra demonstrated capacities as high as 750 mAh/g. The difference, they say, is that the material used in conventional batteries –...
Getting the Job: NJIT Students Share Their Career Fair Know-how
Monday, September 16, 2019
According to NJIT Career Development Services’ most recent annual report, almost one-fifth of undergrads from the Class of 2018 who reported full-time employment indicated an NJIT career fair as their source. That figure certainly demonstrates the value of students attending the fair, to both mingle with prospective employers and leave a lasting impression on recruiters. But vital to the mix in landing a position is preparedness. With the Fall 2019 Career Fair just around the corner — Wednesday, Oct. 2, at NJIT’s Wellness and Events Center — these Highlanders, who scored internships...
NJIT's Elsa Sjunneson-Henry Joins Stars of Science Fiction at 2019 Hugo Awards
Monday, September 16, 2019
J.K. Rowling. Ursula K. LeGuin. Connie Willis. By the time NJIT humanities professor Elsa Sjunneson-Henry left the stage at Ireland’s Convention Centre Dublin on the evening of Aug. 18, she would share a certain place among such historic stars of science fiction literature. Though, the distinction she now shares with them also makes her a “first” in that literary universe. “Hi, my name is Elsa Sjunneson-Henry and I'm the first deafblind woman to win a Hugo,” said Sjunneson-Henry as she began her acceptance speech at the 2019’s Hugo Awards — the most...
Spotlight: Julia Lizik, Evidence of Bright Future for NJIT's First Forensic Science Freshmen Class
Tuesday, September 3, 2019
Walking through NJIT’s green spaces and residence hall courtyards Labor Day week, it’s not uncommon to hear pockets of conversation burst to life among the campus’s bright-eyed freshman newcomers, often of the different roads they’ve traveled to begin their collegiate journeys here at the start of the fall semester. Among them is Julia Lizik. A four-hour drive up I-95 with her mother from their home in Frederick, Maryland, was Lizik’s road to NJIT, though the reasons behind her arrival are part of a rather new academic experience at the university. It was the launch of the...
NJIT Ranks in Top 2% Nationwide in College Salary Report by Payscale
Friday, August 30, 2019
Payscale has released its 2019 College Salary Report and New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has placed #53 out of over 4,000 colleges and universities across the U.S. in the mid-career salary rankings. In addition, NJIT is #1 for state schools in mid-career salary. “NJIT students are in high demand and our alumni enjoy remarkable success, because we specialize in preparing graduates to thrive in what is unquestionable a tech economy,” said NJIT President Joel S. Bloom. “Every major global industry, at its core, is driven by technological advancement. That’s why our students average...
Bio-inspired Disk Mimics Remora's Suction Ability, Gives Insight Into Fish's Evolution
Thursday, August 29, 2019
Remora fishes are famed hitchhikers of the marine world, possessing high-powered suction disks on the back of their head for attaching themselves in torpedo-like fashion to larger hosts that can provide food and safety — from whales and sharks to boats and divers. Key to the remora’s adhesion are the disk’s well-known capabilities for generating suction, as well as friction created by spiky bones within the disk called lamellae to maintain hold on its host. However, the factors driving the evolution of remora’s unique disc morphology have long eluded researchers seeking to understand, and...
Math Success Initiative Holds True to Its Name
Friday, August 23, 2019
It was an intense seven-week program of math enrichment in algebra, pre-calculus and calculus, coupled with college and SAT prep, and on-campus recreation. When it concluded Aug. 9 at a ceremony in the Campus Center Atrium, the 35 rising 12th-graders who participated in the inaugural NJIT/Newark Math Success Initiative (MSI) looked back on their accomplishments with pride and happily accepted their certificates of achievement. “We’re pleased that you’re interested in NJIT, because we’re interested in you,” said Jacqueline Cusack, executive director of the university’s Center for Pre-...
NJIT Grad Leaves Roc Nation Success With Empire State of Mind
Thursday, August 22, 2019
Like many young New Jersey commuters making the morning trek through the Lincoln Tunnel into New York City, Jenessey Amparo-Rosario Morel would shuffle through her phone’s music playlist to find familiar star names like Rihanna, Shakira and Jay-Z. However, for Morel, those particular popular artists would also become clients, and even her new boss, as she entered work for her first day of a three-month co-op role this past February. Her destination at the time: a 40-story tower at 1411 Broadway in midtown Manhattan — headquarters of Jay-Z’s global entertainment company, Roc Nation...
