Q&A With American Chemical Society President Luis Echegoyen
Monday, February 3, 2020
On Feb. 5, NJIT will welcome Luis Echegoyen, 2020 president of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the largest scientific society in the world. As part of the College of Science and Liberal Arts’ Organic Syntheses Distinguished Seminar Speaker series, Echegoyen will speak to the NJIT community to share his experience and research interests over his nearly 50-year career — particularly regarding new possibilities in modern chemical research related to buckyballs, sometimes referred to as "the most magnificent molecule known to man." Echegoyen was...
NJIT Rated 6th in the Nation for Campus Safety
Tuesday, January 28, 2020
The Department of Public Safety at NJIT has been ranked sixth nationwide for its campus safety initiatives. The recognition comes from Safe Campus, an independent organization that strives to improve the overall safety and security of U.S. college and university students, and annually rates campuses across the country for their safety measures. 2020 marks the third consecutive year that NJIT placed among the Top 25 of eligible U.S.-accredited higher-education institutions — 4,298 this time around. “It is both a privilege and an honor to be recognized for making a difference in student...
Researchers Rank "Smartest" Schools of Fish When It Comes to Travel Formations
Tuesday, January 28, 2020
The concert of motion that fish schools are famous for isn’t merely an elaborate display of synchronized swimming. Their seemingly telepathic collective movement is part of a time-tested strategy for improving the group’s chances for survival as a whole, from defense against predators to food-finding and mating. A study published in Physical Review X is offering new details that show how the aquatic flows created by certain schools of fish can benefit each of its individual members in yet another way — hydrodynamically. A research team from New Jersey Institute of Technology...
NJIT Scientists Measure the Evolving Energy of a Solar Flare's Explosive First Minutes
Thursday, January 16, 2020
Toward the end of 2017, a massive new region of magnetic field erupted on the Sun’s surface next to an existing sunspot. The powerful collision of magnetic energy produced a series of potent solar flares, causing turbulent space weather conditions at Earth. These were the first flares to be captured, in their moment-by-moment progression, by NJIT’s then recently opened Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) radio telescope. In research published today in the journal Science, the solar scientists who recorded those images have pinpointed for the first time ever...
Discovery Reveals How Remora Fishes Know When to Hitch a Ride Aboard Their Hosts
Wednesday, January 15, 2020
Remoras are among the most successful marine hitchhikers, thanks to powerful suction discs that allow them to stay tightly fastened to the bodies of sharks, whales and other hosts despite incredible drag forces while traveling through the ocean. But how do these suckerfish sense the exact moment when they must “stick their landing” and board their speedy hosts in the first place? A team of biologists at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Friday Harbor Labs at University of Washington (FHL-UW) and The George Washington University (GWU) now offers an answer. In...
Composting and WEC Solar Panels to Lead Campus Sustainability Efforts in 2020
Wednesday, December 18, 2019
A solar array atop the Wellness and Events Center, plus a food waste recycling effort, are the first two major sustainability projects underway as part of NJIT's commitment to sustainability in the recently adopted 2025 strategic plan. NJIT also recently became a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, joining several other institutions in New Jersey and nationwide which are deeper into their sustainability journeys. "As part of the process of developing the new strategic plan, sustainability came to the forefront as a theme through all...
NJIT, Ocean County College Expand and Renew Transfer Agreement
Monday, December 16, 2019
A new two-year agreement between Ocean County College and New Jersey Institute of Technology allows OCC graduates to transfer directly into NJIT colleges. The agreement went into effect on October 4, 2019 and covers NJIT's College of Science and Liberal Arts; Newark College of Engineering; Martin Tuchman School of Management; and Ying Wu College of Computing. In a ceremony at Ocean County College today, NJIT Provost Fadi Deek said our relationship with OCC is a special one. "NJIT’s relationship with Ocean County College is among the earliest with community colleges in New Jersey....
NJIT to Launch New Programs in Cell and Gene Therapy
Wednesday, December 11, 2019
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in collaboration with New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), an NJIT corporation, has announced it will soon offer both a Professional Science Masters (PSM) degree program and professional graduate certificate in the rapidly expanding field of cell and gene therapy. The 30-credit M.Sc. degree — available in spring 2020 as part of NJIT’s Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science’s pharmaceutical chemistry master's program — aims to "train the next generation of scientists and engineers in modern aspects of cell and gene therapy, emphasizing...
CSI: NJIT On the Scene, Young Investigators Train Up in Crime Scene Forensics
Monday, December 9, 2019
Where were you the night of Nov. 26th? Anyone exiting the Summit Street parking garage that evening would have most certainly been counted among the witnesses to a brightly-lit, taped-off scene surrounding a faded-white ’98 Chevy Lumina where an investigation was underway — carried out by a special unit of NJIT’s own CSI students-in-training. A new course launched this fall in crime scene investigation, and a new “forensic car” on campus dedicated to simulating live crime scene scenarios such as this one, is giving undergrads of NJIT’s forensic science program the chance to take to...
NJIT Opens State-of-the-Art Nanoelectronics Fabrication Facility
Thursday, December 5, 2019
Sagnik Basuray is developing a device the size of a dollar coin that will detect cancer biomarkers in patients in remission by sampling a tiny drop of blood with a dip stick. His sensor is groundbreaking not only in its simplicity, but also in its portability. It’s meant to be used at home. “Cancer patients in remission need to be kept informed at all times about the status of their disease, so a point-of-care test that they can administer themselves makes sense,” noted Basuray, an assistant professor of chemical and materials engineering. “We’re designing one that is non-invasive,...
