New Course to Give Students Deeper Insights into Middle East Conflicts
This spring, NJIT students will have the opportunity to gain a richer picture of the complex history and politics of the Middle East that continue to shape today’s headlines, drive foreign policy debates and affect global stability.A new course opening next semester, “Middle East Conflicts: State Building, Regional Tensions, Peace Processes,” will be taught by Doron Shultziner, an associate professor at Jerusalem Multidisciplinary College and visiting scholar in NJIT’s Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.Shultziner — who teaches in comparative politics, political development and…

How NJIT Graduate Student Jaimee Diogo Is Transforming STEM Futures Through ‘STEM Like a Girl’
The kinetic sculptures were supposed to spin gently when the girls turned on their hair dryers. But as soon as the first creation twirled into motion — foil shimmering, ribbons fluttering — the whole room lit up. A crowd of elementary-aged girls leaned in, laughing as their sculptures wobbled, spun or rocketed more wildly than expected. When Jaimee Diogo launched the New Jersey chapter of STEM Like a Girl in October 2024, she wasn’t simply organizing workshops, she was creating the environment she wished she’d had growing up. Now a graduate student in NJIT’s biology of health program and…

NJIT Scientists Track Recent Solar Flare Disruptions in Earth’s Ionosphere
As this month’s string of powerful X-class solar flares sparked brilliant aurorae that lit up skies across an unusually wide swath of the globe — from northern Europe to Florida — researchers at NJIT’s Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research (CSTR) captured a less visible, but crucial, record of the storm’s impact on Earth’s upper atmosphere.Recent measurements recorded by NJIT’s new network of radio telescopes show how a rare sequence of intense flares from Nov. 9–14, including an X5.1 event marking 2025’s strongest flare so far, jolted the ionosphere — the plasma-filled atmospheric layer…

NJIT Professor's Award-Winning Album Amplifies Heroine Voices of WWII's Italian Resistance
World War II has been revisited countless times in books and films. But NJIT professor Laura Montanari set out on a unique songwriting project to bring to life overlooked voices in the Allied fight against fascism — heroines of Italy’s underground resistance.
Her new collection of “archival songs”— blending original music with interviews from female partisans (partigiane) who resisted the Nazi occupation and Fascist Italian Social Republic in the 1940s — has gained international recognition.
The research-based album and doctoral dissertation, “Songwriting Oral History Interviews:…

NJIT and NJII Launch PureTrace Labs to Commercialize PFAS Detection Technology
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII) today announced the launch of PureTrace Labs, a startup created to bring NJIT-developed technology for rapid detection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to market.
The company marks the first official launch from NJII’s Venture Studio, supported by an investment of up to $1 million.
The launch event took place Oct. 29, at the Profeta Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, where leaders from NJIT and NJII formalized the agreement through an exclusive startup license for NJIT Technology…

NJIT Researchers, Ham Radio Operators Partner to Track Impact of Space Weather
Researchers from four universities, including New Jersey Institute of Technology, are expanding a network of ham radio operators in North America to better track how the earth’s upper atmosphere is impacted by natural phenomena such as geomagnetic storms and lightning.
The researchers are also upgrading the equipment that the operators use to record data. The goal is two-fold: extend the footprint of the network and produce more refined data. That data, in turn, will help scientists and their students better understand how those phenomena cause breakdowns in satellite transmission or…

NJIT's Julie Ancis Explores Cyberpsychology's Role in Modern Computing in ACM Publication
In a new article featured in Communications of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM), NJIT Distinguished Professor Julie Ancis explores how cyberpsychology — the study of the two-way relationship between people and technology — is reshaping modern computing.
Presenting more than a single experiment or dataset, Ancis offers a sweeping synthesis that pulls together decades of behavioral and computing research. Her article, “Cyberpsychology’s Influence on Modern Computing,” argues that understanding the human mind is no longer optional in the digital age — it’s the missing half of…

An Expert in Marine Acoustics Wins NJIT's 2025 Excellence in Research and Innovation Award
Eliza Michalopoulou, a mathematician who develops acoustic techniques to reveal uncharted features of the ocean and the movements of its inhabitants, is this year’s winner of NJIT’s Foundation Excellence in Research and Innovation award.
Her field, geoacoustic inversion, uses signal processing and mathematical models to transform underwater sound waves into detailed information about the location of sources such as submarines and whales, and characteristics of the seabed. She studies how physical properties of the ocean shape the way sound travels beneath the surface.
The medal is awarded…
