Navid Heydarishahreza - ECE PhD Student of the Month - June 2025
Friday, May 30, 2025
Navid Heydarishahreza is a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at NJIT, advised by Professor Nirwan Ansari. His research focuses on link quality optimization, interference management, and mobility management in integrated terrestrial and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks. What would you say could be the next big thing in your area of research? The next big development will likely be the seamless integration of terrestrial and satellite networks into a unified global communication fabric. As demand grows for reliable connectivity in remote and mobile...
Be True to Yourself & Make a Difference, Speakers Tell NJIT's Class of 2025
Wednesday, May 21, 2025
Persevere, be authentic, remain flexible and make a difference in the world, speakers told the Class of 2025 at New Jersey Institute of Technology’s undergraduate commencement. Keynote speaker Kevin O’Toole, chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said NJIT graduates “are not just job-ready; they’re mission-ready. They’re problem-solvers. They’re innovators. They’re people who roll up their sleeves and get things done. And they’re the ones we need at the table solving our country’s problems.” “Your STEM education from this terrific...
Rooted in Research, Ready to Lead: NJIT's Master's and Doctoral Degree Class of 2025
Monday, May 19, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology served up a full day of fanfare as its advanced degree graduates walked across the stage in the Bloom Wellness and Events Center in three commencement ceremonies. The 2025 master’s and doctoral class exemplifies the institution’s commitment to research and scholarship across a diverse range of disciplines. Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs John Pelesko called the ceremonies to order. Pelesko, himself a 1997 alumnus of NJIT as the very first Ph.D. graduate in mathematical sciences, implored students to both soak in this moment as they...
Architect, Engineer, Pilot Highlight Air Force ROTC Class of 2025
Thursday, May 8, 2025
Every year, NJIT’s detachment of the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps graduates several successful cadets into the military officer ranks. Three members of the Class of 2025 spoke about their backgrounds that led them to the program, experiences during their time as Highlanders and future plans. The young men who will soon receive their commissions as second lieutenants are Fredy Aleman Jr., a computer engineering major from Elizabeth; Irvin Hoyos, an architecture major from Paterson; and Michael Ruzzi, an industrial engineering major from Trenton. The detachment formed in 1949...
Wenrui Zhang - ECE PhD Student of the Month - May 2025
Thursday, May 1, 2025
Wenrui Zhang is a Ph.D. student at UNICS Lab in the ECE Department at NJIT. He is advised by Dr. Tao Han. Wenrui joined Han’s lab in January 2024 and his research interests include Distributed Quantum Computing (DQC), quantum circuit cutting and Quantum Network (QN). What would you say that could be the next big thing in your area of research? In the field of distributed quantum computing and quantum networks ,a major challenge lies in the lack of high-fidelity, low-latency quantum communication technologies and compatible system architectures. For long-distance communication, the...
An Alarm Clock that Hides From You is Highlight of MakeNJIT Competition
Monday, April 28, 2025
A robotic alarm clock that hides from you, so you have to get out of bed anyway if you wish to silence it, was the star Highlander entry in the spring 2025 edition of the MakeNJIT hardware hackathon. The clockmakers earned third place overall among 47 teams from several universities. Members of Team Daniel knew that many tinkerers have built such devices, but they designed their own version just for the fun and education of it. Daniel’s roster included mechanical engineering major Jiro Dela Cruz, his fraternal twin brother Juno who studies computer science, Andrey Diaz-Ortega also in...
3 NJIT Colleges Are Among US News 'Best Graduate Schools'
Tuesday, April 8, 2025
The latest graduate studies rankings from U.S. News & World Report highlight the national standing of New Jersey Institute of Technology in the fields of engineering, computer science and now business. NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering (NCE) ranks No. 85 on the publication’s list of the Best Engineering Schools in the U.S. — the tenth consecutive year the NCE has made the top 100. “NJIT’s firm position in the national rankings reflects our ongoing dedication to academic excellence, innovative research and the success of our graduate students,” said Moshe Kam, dean of NCE. NCE...
Qirui Tian - ECE PhD Student of the Month - April 2025
Tuesday, April 1, 2025
Qirui Tian is a Ph.D. candidate supervised by Dr. Qing Liu in the ECE Department at NJIT. Qirui joined Dr. Liu's lab in September 2021 and has research that focuses on High-Performance Computing (HPC), data reduction, I/O and storage systems. What would you say that could be the next big thing in your area of research? In the research field of data reduction, error-bounded compression with adaptive precision could become the next breakthrough. Traditional error-bounded compression methods typically rely on globally or locally fixed error thresholds, whereas adaptive precision...
NJIT Highlander Model Rocket is a Transformer, Becomes Drone, Lands Itself
Monday, March 24, 2025
The NJIT Rocketry Club is experimenting with a model that autonomously lands itself standing up, a la SpaceX, but accomplished through novel methods. SpaceX rockets fire their liquid fuel thrusters while descending. Other hobbyists have already tried to duplicate that method, so the Highlanders devised a unique approach: next year, they want to make the nose cone of their Project Lotus rocket unfold like flower petals, revealing a drone that takes control. It’s a new path in model rocketry, where nose cones typically pop open to expose a simple parachute. Hobbyists have done it this way...
NJIT's First-Year Engineers 'Dive' into Design, Shaping the Future at Annual Showcase
Tuesday, March 11, 2025
The spirit of innovation and hands-on learning was in full force at the Newark College of Engineering's (NCE) annual First-Year Engineering Design Showcase, a highlight of National Engineers Week. This popular event, a testament to NJIT's commitment to early-stage practical engineering experience, saw NCE’s brightest first-year minds — 180 presenters on 51 teams — show their innovative projects. NCE Dean Moshe Kam emphasized the distinctive approach NJIT takes in introducing design to its students. "The significance of this event is that it takes first-year students and puts them in the...
