NJIT Gets High Marks and Recognition in Global Rankings by QS
NJIT is a premier institution for international students and faculty, and a global rankings organization has recognized this achievement with hard data.
Quacquarelli Symonds, a British company known for worldwide university rankings and research, issued a new report today noting that 31.9% of NJIT students are from overseas, compared to a global median of 9.3%, placing NJIT 174th on the global ranking which is the top 15%. NJIT also ranked 294th in the percent of international faculty, far exceeding the global median of 9.2%, in the top 25 percent.
The report evaluated almost 1,700 universities worldwide and ranked 1,300, of which only 177 from the U.S. made the cut. It measured each school by academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per faculty, faculty-student ratio, international faculty and international students. In addition to rising in the international categories, NJIT also rose in academic reputation, employer reputation and citations per faculty. The latter was impressive, increasing to 57.4 citations per faculty member, compared to 39.2 globally.
“NJIT has worked meticulously to engage and develop a productive and widely accessible academic environment for both faculty and students,” said Fadi P. Deek, provost and senior executive vice president of NJIT. “As a polytechnic university with local and global impact, we are gratified to be recognized globally, and will continue to emphasize the importance of ground-breaking and applied research.”
"We are thrilled to see NJIT in the latest Quacquarelli Symonds rankings. Our international students know we are a vital resource and are dedicated to helping them have a successful experience at such a renowned research institution," said Beth Calamia Scheckel, associate director of NJIT's Office of Global Initiatives.
NJIT resources for international students include several identity-based clubs and organizations.
In addition to the many students who seek to become Highlanders from overseas, there are also many American students who create their own international experience by studying abroad. Though not covered in the report, NJIT in the past few years has tripled the amount of students who chose this option, Calamia Scheckel noted. Many students are anxious to travel after being unable to do so during the COVID pandemic, and there will also be two faculty-led travel programs, she said.
Last month, Quacquarelli Symonds ranked NJIT as a top 100 university in the U.S., and third in New Jersey. They cited the departments of computer science, electrical engineering and mathematics as being top-100 programs in their own regard.
