The ALICE Training Institute has recertified NJIT in active threat and emergency response efforts, with 82% of its full-time staff and faculty completing online training that’s designed to safeguard the campus community in the event of an active threat. To achieve recertification, NJIT’s Department of Public Safety also conducted a drill simulating an active threat and updated the NJIT Emergency and Continuity of Operations Plan that met the institute’s standards, Deputy Chief Kevin Kesselman said.

Ying Wu College of Computing Assistant Prof. Michael Lee, in an effort to help informatics students consider social consciousness, began teaching a new course last spring, Design Thinking: Addressing Structural Inequality, which will be offered again in spring 2021 due to its success.

Focused on expanding its footprint in research and teaching, these strategic faculty hires are an important element of that effort, bringing an impressive depth and breadth of knowledge to the college and its students.

Yiannis Koutis wants to know if a method inspired by electrical laws could lead to a faster and more insightful way of comparing seemingly disparate networks. Koutis, an associate professor of computer science in NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing, will study this question for his $150,000 research grant from the National Science Foundation program known as EAGER — EArly-concept Grants for Exploratory Research — which supports research that is unproven yet potentially transformative.
