In 1964, legendary director Stanley Kubrick met with legendary science fiction author Arthur C. Clark to embark on one of the most ambitious films ever made — “2001: A Space Odyssey”. 

In a 141-minute cinematic spectacle that would take four years to produce, the two artists uniquely blended aspects of science and art to create a groundbreaking futuristic mythology that is still studied in film schools and debated by global audiences today.

This fall, NJIT has announced it will launch its highly anticipated Forensic Science Bachelor of Science degree program — a unique program designed for undergraduate students interested in the rapidly expanding fields of forensic science and crime scene investigation. 

Last September, a massive new region of magnetic field erupted on the Sun’s surface next to an existing sunspot. The powerful collision of magnetic fields produced a series of potent solar flares, causing turbulent space weather conditions at Earth. These were the first flares to be captured, in their moment-by-moment progression, by NJIT’s recently expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA). 

This spring, NJIT’s 2018 College of Science and Liberal Arts Awards honored an exclusive group of its undergraduate and graduate seniors with the CSLA Outstanding Student Award — a distinction annually given to students who have demonstrated the highest level of excellence in their field.

Engineering Educator Dr. Leah Hope Jamieson to Deliver 2018 Commencement Address and Receive Honorary Doctor of Science

This May, NJIT’s College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA) celebrated a year of standout achievements from its faculty, staff, students and alumni at the 2018 College of Science and Liberal Arts Awards Ceremony. 

The Sun’s corona, invisible to the human eye except when it appears briefly as a fiery halo of plasma during a solar eclipse, remains a puzzle even to scientists who study it closely. Beginning 1,300 miles from the star’s surface and extending millions more in every direction, it is more than a hundred times hotter than lower layers much closer to the fusion reactor at the Sun’s core.

This month, the work of NJIT’s top student researchers was put on display at the 2018 Knox Student Research Showcase, “A Glimpse Into the Future”. 

The showcase, which annually honors outstanding research done at NJIT by its graduate and undergraduate students, awarded Najmaddin Akhundov first place among this year’s graduate researchers for developing a computational model to track and control invasive species that threaten the environment.
