Be True to Yourself & Make a Difference, Speakers Tell NJIT's Class of 2025
Wednesday, May 21, 2025
Persevere, be authentic, remain flexible and make a difference in the world, speakers told the Class of 2025 at New Jersey Institute of Technology’s undergraduate commencement. Keynote speaker Kevin O’Toole, chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said NJIT graduates “are not just job-ready; they’re mission-ready. They’re problem-solvers. They’re innovators. They’re people who roll up their sleeves and get things done. And they’re the ones we need at the table solving our country’s problems.” “Your STEM education from this terrific...
Rooted in Research, Ready to Lead: NJIT's Master's and Doctoral Degree Class of 2025
Monday, May 19, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology served up a full day of fanfare as its advanced degree graduates walked across the stage in the Bloom Wellness and Events Center in three commencement ceremonies. The 2025 master’s and doctoral class exemplifies the institution’s commitment to research and scholarship across a diverse range of disciplines. Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs John Pelesko called the ceremonies to order. Pelesko, himself a 1997 alumnus of NJIT as the very first Ph.D. graduate in mathematical sciences, implored students to both soak in this moment as they...
2025 HCSLA Awards Cap Historic Year, Honor Princeton University Press Director
Friday, May 16, 2025
NJIT’s Jordan Hu College of Science and Liberal Arts (HCSLA) capped one of the most eventful years in its history with its annual awards ceremony recently — the first under its new name, which was prominently displayed on gonfalons and signage decorating the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center to mark the occasion. The event attracted university leaders like NJIT President Teik C. Lim, alongside students, faculty, alumni and special guests including Princeton University Press (PUP) Director Christie Henry, for an afternoon celebrating this year’s standout performers and the...

NJIT Highlander Model Rocket is a Transformer, Becomes Drone, Lands Itself
Monday, March 24, 2025
The NJIT Rocketry Club is experimenting with a model that autonomously lands itself standing up, a la SpaceX, but accomplished through novel methods. SpaceX rockets fire their liquid fuel thrusters while descending. Other hobbyists have already tried to duplicate that method, so the Highlanders devised a unique approach: next year, they want to make the nose cone of their Project Lotus rocket unfold like flower petals, revealing a drone that takes control. It’s a new path in model rocketry, where nose cones typically pop open to expose a simple parachute. Hobbyists have done it this way...
NJIT's Grace Hopper AI Research Institute Launches with $1 Million in Research Proposals
Monday, February 17, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has taken a significant step in its commitment to advancing artificial intelligence by establishing the Grace Hopper AI Research Institute (GHRI). The institute is a key component of NJIT's $10 million AI Initiative aimed at enhancing the university's capabilities in AI research and applications. In its inaugural call for research proposals, GHRI received more than $1 million in funding requests. These proposals span a diverse range of departments and fields, including engineering, computer science, mathematics and university operations. This...
NJIT Physicist Dale Gary Named American Astronomical Society Fellow
Wednesday, January 22, 2025
The American Astronomical Society (AAS) has named Dale Gary, distinguished professor of physics at NJIT’s Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research (CSTR), one of 24 new AAS Fellows for 2025. The Society annually honors the most distinguished members from its global community of over 8,000 astronomers, recognizing extraordinary achievements and service in the astronomical sciences. The AAS cited Gary specifically “for outstanding national and international leadership in solar radio engineering and solar physics resulting in fundamentally new understanding of solar energetic processes that...
NJIT Grad Student Showcases 3D-Printed Innovation for Solar Eclipse Observations at AGU Meeting
Tuesday, December 24, 2024
NJIT physics graduate student Sam Granovsky presented groundbreaking findings on the solar corona during the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse at the Annual American Geophysical Union (AGU) Meeting in Washington, D.C., held December 9-13, 2024. Using a custom-built, 3D-printed spectrograph of his own design, Granovsky observed high-temperature emissions from hot gases surrounding solar prominences—massive, magnetized structures filled with solar plasma that extend from the Sun into space. These findings provide new insights into the origins of these prominences, whose eruptions can...
NJIT Launches AI-Powered Solar Eruption Center with $5M NASA Grant
Tuesday, October 15, 2024
NJIT's Institute for Space Weather Sciences (ISWS) has been awarded a $5 million NASA grant to open a new research center dedicated to developing the next generation of solar eruption prediction capabilities, powered by artificial intelligence. The new AI-Powered Solar Eruption Center of Excellence in Research and Education (SEC) will partner with NASA, New York University and IBM to advance AI and machine learning tools for improving the predictability of powerful solar eruptions at their onset, such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and enhance our physical understanding...
