NJIT Highlander Model Rocket is a Transformer, Becomes Drone, Lands Itself
Monday, March 24, 2025
The NJIT Rocketry Club is experimenting with a model that autonomously lands itself standing up, a la SpaceX, but accomplished through novel methods. SpaceX rockets fire their liquid fuel thrusters while descending. Other hobbyists have already tried to duplicate that method, so the Highlanders devised a unique approach: next year, they want to make the nose cone of their Project Lotus rocket unfold like flower petals, revealing a drone that takes control. It’s a new path in model rocketry, where nose cones typically pop open to expose a simple parachute. Hobbyists have done it this way...
NJIT's First-Year Engineers 'Dive' into Design, Shaping the Future at Annual Showcase
Tuesday, March 11, 2025
The spirit of innovation and hands-on learning was in full force at the Newark College of Engineering's (NCE) annual First-Year Engineering Design Showcase, a highlight of National Engineers Week. This popular event, a testament to NJIT's commitment to early-stage practical engineering experience, saw NCE’s brightest first-year minds — 180 presenters on 51 teams — show their innovative projects. NCE Dean Moshe Kam emphasized the distinctive approach NJIT takes in introducing design to its students. "The significance of this event is that it takes first-year students and puts them in the...

Monday, February 17, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has taken a significant step in its commitment to advancing artificial intelligence by establishing the Grace Hopper AI Research Institute (GHRI). The institute is a key component of NJIT's $10 million AI Initiative aimed at enhancing the university's capabilities in AI research and applications. In its inaugural call for research proposals, GHRI received more than $1 million in funding requests. These proposals span a diverse range of departments and fields, including engineering, computer science, mathematics and university operations. This...
Ahmad ALBarqawi - ECE PhD Student of the Month - February 2025
Tuesday, February 4, 2025
Ahmad ALBarqawi is a Ph.D. student specializing in machine learning and security, with a primary focus on deepfakes. His research aims to develop robust detection models that can withstand adversarial attacks and generalize effectively across different generative models. Deepfake technology has advanced rapidly, making it crucial to build security measures that can adapt to evolving threats. By working at the intersection of AI security, adversarial robustness, and generative models, he strives to enhance the reliability of deepfake detection and prevent misuse in areas such as...
