Next Stop for NJIT Highlander: University of Florida to Master Finance and Win Matches
Tuesday, May 13, 2025
A passion for business grew for Pablo Perez Ramos at New Jersey Institute of Technology and spurred him to now pursue a master’s in finance at the University of Florida. His choice of graduate school also reveals his love for tennis, as UF won a national team championship in 2021 when now 13th ranked pro Ben Shelton played there. You see, Perez Ramos, who tallied an impressive 73-21 record in singles matches as a Highlander, will continue to compete as a Gator. So, as he bolsters his academic credentials, he’ll chase his dream of becoming a top 100 player in the world. “Florida...
Gender's Role in Climate Change, AI Highlighted at NJIT Women's Tech Conference
Thursday, March 13, 2025
A keynote speaker at NJIT’s Women Designing the Future conference explained the imperative for holistic approaches to climate change policy, while another shared her tale of breaking through glass ceilings to develop innovative artificial intelligence software. The speakers — Rhiana Gunn-Wright, who orchestrated behind-the-scenes policymaking for the 2019 Green New Deal, and Danielle Feinberg, visual effects supervisor at Pixar — were on campus March 7 to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of the NJIT Murray Center for Women in Technology, and also for Women’s History Month. “We had...
Expanding Housing: NJIT's Rebuild of Oak Hall Will More Than Double Its Beds
Wednesday, February 26, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology is rebuilding its second oldest residence hall to meet a burgeoning demand for housing at the growing public university. The new Oak Hall on Summit Street in Newark will contain 453 beds in 154 units — more than double the current totals. The units will take the form of apartments for either two or four students, complete with kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms. There will also be single units for resident assistants. The 15-story building will also feature an array of common areas, including a lounge for studying, a game room, conference rooms for...

The New Neighbor to NJIT's Food Pantry? A Career Closet
Thursday, September 12, 2024
Responding to a student need, New Jersey Institute of Technology has opened a Career Closet that supplies free dress clothes, shoes and accessories for interviews, internships or jobs. The closet, on the fourth floor of the Campus Center, also offers seasonal and casual clothes for campus residents and commuters. It’s connected to a revamped Food Pantry that has everything from canned and boxed foods to produce and toiletries. A growing number of students need food and clothes, with the pantry alone now serving more than 300 students a month, according to Daniel Waffenfeld, assistant...
NJIT Graduate Takes a Multidisciplinary Path to Biotech
Monday, June 3, 2024
Gbocho Obo’s entrée into biotechnology came via the science, technology and society bachelor’s he earned at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The multidisciplinary degree from NJIT's College of Science and Liberal Arts appealed to his interest in how science and tech impacts people of color like himself. “My major gave me the skill to understand the reasons why the statistics concerning people of color and other minority groups are what they are, scientifically speaking,” Obo said. “I loved most the gathering of quantitative and qualitative data, personal experience...
First-Year Engineering Majors Bond in Classrooms and Rocket Flights
Thursday, November 30, 2023
Hundreds of students in NJIT’s introductory engineering course, Fundamentals of Engineering Design 101, are having a greater shared experience during the fall 2023 semester than any incoming class since the 1990s. Back then, Newark College of Engineering began customizing the FED syllabus for each major field. Chemical engineering students may have learned more about compounding and processing, while civil engineering students learned the basics of surveying and transportation systems. Now the FED sections are unifying once more. With so many fields of engineering sharing overlapping...
State Funding 40-50 New Trees for NJIT Campus to Help the Environment
Friday, September 29, 2023
New state funding and student research will help nurture the 300 trees, and add many more, that live on and around New Jersey Institute of Technology’s campus in downtown Newark. The trees provide shade and beauty, while absorbing 30 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide annually and producing about 75% of that amount in oxygen, said Gareth Russell, associate professor of biological sciences and co-director of the Urban Ecology Lab — but the 13 current species are not necessarily the right trees for our needs, and many of them are not yet mature, he explained. “Unfortunately, more than half...
NJIT Launches Council to Hear from Students
Tuesday, September 26, 2023
In an effort for students to share their insights and drive positive change within the NJIT community, Provost and Senior Vice president for Academic Affairs John Pelesko, and Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Marybeth Boger have launched the NJIT Undergraduate Student Advisory Council. This council will enable enthusiastic undergraduates to have informal conversations with the provost and the dean of students, helping to keep NJIT leadership informed, in real time, about the student experience. “It’s important to not just plan for the next semester,...
National Academy of Construction Elects NJIT's Andrew Christ Amid Campus Transformation
Tuesday, June 6, 2023
Andrew Christ, senior vice president for real estate development and capital operations at New Jersey Institute of Technology, has been elected to the National Academy of Construction. The academy recognizes exceptional leaders from across the construction industry — including construction managers, contractors, designers, educators and financial managers — who advance the industry through innovation and lasting improvements. “It’s an incredible honor,” said Christ, an NJIT alumnus who holds two engineering degrees and became an administrator in 2014. “This is an organization that’s...
