NJIT Jumps in 'Washington Monthly' Rankings, Top 25 Value University in the Northeast
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) improved in Washington Monthly’s college rankings, breaking into the top 25 for the publication’s “Best Bang for Your Buck” rankings for Northeast colleges and universities.
The value ranking is a measure of the social mobility metrics from the main rankings of four-year institutions. NJIT has vaulted 125 positions in the Northeast social mobility ranking since 2020.
Washington Monthly evaluated 1,507 public, private nonprofit, and for-profit colleges that award doctoral, master’s, and baccalaureate degrees (excluding exclusively graduate colleges) and that participate in financial aid programs. NJIT’s overall ranking jumped 54 spots from 2020, now ranking No. 101 nationally.
Social mobility and return on investment have become an increasing factor in many college rankings communicating return on investment to students. Washington Monthly’s methodology factors in several main data points: overall eight-year graduation rate which presents a more complete picture of collegiate success, Pell recipient enrollment and graduation rate, net price, and earnings 10 years after graduation. Also factored into the social mobility score were admit rate, and racial/ethnic and gender makeup of the student body.
NJIT President Teik C. Lim said, “We are thrilled to be recognized for the incredible value and opportunity for social mobility that NJIT provides to its students. Their success is our most important outcome.”
The accolade earned by Washington Monthly reinforces NJIT’s standing as a high-value school with excellent return on investment. NJIT was ranked: No. 1 by Forbes for economic mobility; No. 1 public school in New Jersey for net-price value 10 years post graduation by the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce; No. 14 “Best College” by Money; and top 2% for alumni mid-career earnings by Payscale; and No. 33 “Best Value College” by The Princeton Review.
