A year earlier than targeted, New Jersey Institute of Technology has earned the federal distinction of being a Hispanic-serving institution (HSI).

Practice makes perfect, and a new system being tested and perfected enables surgical trainees to obtain cutting-edge instruction in real-time through a new artificial intelligence program. As medical students conduct surgical exercises, the AI software scans a live video feed and provides immediate, personalized feedback.The solution is among the first generation of AI teachers giving real-time feedback and may pioneer the use of similar instructional technology in other industries, including additional areas of healthcare and medicine.

With the recent launch of its Center for Translational Research, NJIT is promising to quicken the pace of converting lab research into beneficial, market-ready products and services.

The Highlanders just keep finding a way to win. Recently, the ingenuity of Newark College of Engineering’s brightest first-year students was on full display at the 2024 NCE First Year Engineering Design Showcase.

Machines still can’t think, but now they can validate your feelings, based on new research from New Jersey Institute of Technology Assistant Professor Jorge Fresneda. Fresneda started his career as a chemist and then became an expert in neuroanalytics. He studies how measurements of brain activity and skin conductance can predict a person’s emotions with high accuracy, and how such information can be used in fields such as entertainment, management, marketing and well-being.

Four NJIT Highlanders are featured in NJBIZ’s Power 100 list for 2024, including President Teik C. Lim. The others are Luis De La Hoz, who serves on NJIT’s Hispanic Latinx Leadership Council, and two members of the Board of Directors of NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Institute: Debbie Hart and Michele Siekerka. In its entry for Lim, the business publication cited the high rank that NJIT achieved from The Wall Street Journal/College Pulse last year: No. 19 in the U.S. — the second highest ranking for a public university.

There seems to be something special brewing in Newark. In a meeting of in-state rivals, the NJIT men's lacrosse team rallied from four goals down in the third quarter and three down in the fourth to beat the Monmouth Hawks, 14-13, in overtime Wednesday evening at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
