As data from the Anti-Defamation League shows antisemitism growing on college campuses in recent years and spiking after the Hamas-Israel conflict, a New Jersey Institute of Technology researcher is doing her part to combat the trend by developing a training model that will help prepare mental health professionals who work with Jewish students.

Artificial intelligence shows tremendous potential in forecasting, be it in identifying a vulnerable power line via a drone photo or analyzing body camera footage to flag a police officer who may be at risk for using excessive force, according to Michael Johnson, president of the New Jersey Innovation Institute, an NJIT corporation that accelerates innovation.

NJIT hosted a program and reception to celebrate the naming of the United Services, Inc. Fitness Center in the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center (WEC). United Services, Inc. (USI) pledged $1 million to NJIT. The company is a key NJIT contractor and provides operational services in the WEC.

NJIT Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Wunmi Sadik has recently been honored with the prestigious Wallace H. Coulter Lectureship during a guest appearance at one of the largest scientific conferences on laboratory science in the world, Pittcon. The Wallace H. Coulter Lectureship is presented each year at Pittcon to an “outstanding individual who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to, and made important contributions that have had a significant impact on education, practice and/or research in laboratory science.”

NJIT graduate student Kenna Squier scored a team-best 15 points, leading the Highlanders to a 64-38 home victory on Senior Day over visiting Bryant in the final America East Conference regular season game inside the Joel and Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center.

NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College held its First-Year Seminar Biodiversity Initiatives colloquium, in which six student-led proposals were presented to renovate an area next to Kupfrian Hall. These student-driven initiatives allow for the Urban Ecology Lab (UEL), ADHC, the Real Estate Development and Capital Operations (REDCO) and the Office of Sustainability to team up together to make NJIT’s campus into a more sustainable and biodiverse community.

Six NJIT researchers have secured grants in the latest round of funding provided by the New Jersey Health Foundation (NJHF), which has increased its funding in both its Community Health, Social Services and Education Program, as well as its traditional research program this year. The $4 million round of funding brings the NJHF’s total to $70 million since the inception of its annual grant program.

Six exceptional students have been awarded the Avanade STEM Scholarship to further their pursuit of a degree at NJIT. Avanade, in support of its mission to encourage young people — especially women — to study and succeed in STEM disciplines, has partnered with NJIT since 2016 and awarded scholarships annually to advance this cause.

NJIT has established employee resource groups (ERG) that meet regularly, build community for underrepresented employees and encourage faculty and staff to connect outside of their direct working relationships. This February for Black History Month, NJIT is celebrating its Black/African American ERG and publishing an employee spotlight on two of its members: Sanjeannetta Worley, associate director of Residence Life; and Vincent Oria, professor of computer science in the Ying Wu College of Computing.
