The New Jersey Chemistry Olympics (NJCO) has become an NJIT springtime tradition — for more than three decades, scores of young chemists prepare throughout the year for the competition, culminating on campus in a one-day test of wits among high school teams from across the state.

For much of her career, Oya Tukel, dean of NJIT’s Martin Tuchman School of Management and a professor of supply chain management, has researched problems in resource-constrained project scheduling that can cause significant delays, particularly for large, complex projects that require thousands of activities.

Zambia, a country in south-central Africa, is rich in natural resources but significantly lacking in technological and educational resources. This has made it difficult for the country to boost economic development, alleviate poverty and improve quality of life. Enter Keith Williams, NJIT university lecturer in informatics, who is helping the Zambian government build the nation’s IT infrastructure from the ground up — setting up and delivering technological education at local universities as well as reengineering the government online.

The New Jersey Institute of Technology community notes with great sadness the passing of John J. Mooney MS ’60, an inspired engineer, renowned inventor and beloved alumnus of Newark College of Engineering who is best known for developing a catalytic converter for vehicles that filters three toxic chemicals.

Donald “Will” Andrews, NJIT’s first-ever recipient of the Humanity in Action Fellowship, attributes his selection for the distinguished summertime program to his choice of study at the university: industrial engineering. “There probably weren’t that many engineers that applied … so that made my application stand out from the start — like, ‘hey, look, we have an engineer from Kentucky applying for this social sciences fellowship in Europe,’” said Andrews laughingly.

Studying the evolution and function of online shopping communities could teach computer science researchers about online community-making in general, experts at NJIT said in a series of recent papers. The papers cover the methods and motivations of how shoppers interact with each other online, and examine such communities depend on members’ participation and contributions, according to doctoral student Yu Xu and Assistant Professor Michael Lee, both of the informatics department of the Ying Wu College of Computing.

The America East Conference and New Jersey Institute of Technology announced that the Highlanders will become the 10th full member institution of the America East, effective for the 2020-21 academic year. NJIT will officially join the league July 1, 2020.
