Graduate from NJIT@JerseyCity First Cohort Shares His Experience
Voluminous amounts of data can be overwhelming to even the most experienced professional. That was the experience of Roberto Rivera, a senior research analyst with NJ TRANSIT. Spending his days immersed in large data sets, Roberto realized that continuing his education would provide him with additional skills and training to help him manage the increasingly data-intensive nature of his work.
In May 2020, Roberto graduated with a certificate in data mining; one of the first six graduates from NJIT@JerseyCity. Launched in the fall of 2019 and focused on the needs of professionals interested in graduate-level education, NJIT @JerseyCity offers part-time and full-time master’s and certificate programs in data science, computer science, and cybersecurity. Located mere steps from the PATH and NJ Light Rail along the waterfront, NJIT @JerseyCity proved a convenient learning destination for a busy working professional like Roberto.
“My current role at NJ TRANSIT requires discovering patterns and relationships in the data in order to help make better business decisions,” Rivera explains. “The data mining certificate program at Jersey City had an intense workload but I now have a clear idea on how to automate, collect, manage, calculate and analyze the processing of data and information more efficiently.”
In addition to benefitting from a curriculum created and taught by data science experts, Rivera enjoyed being in a class with people who shared his passion for furthering their education and applying new knowledge and skills to their work.
With his certificate in hand, Rivera has decided to continue his education at NJIT towards a MS in Information Systems this fall. The academic credits earned towards his certificate in data mining will count towards this degree, so he will emerge in a few semesters with two credentials for the price of one. Says Rivera: “My passions lie in understanding the various business processes and creating a link between the users or customers and the technology. I hope to be able to get better at my job, enhance my career, become an authority, build my credibility, and set myself apart in the job market. NJIT @JerseyCity helped prepare me to achieve those goals and more.”
