To Engage Black Community, Computer Science Chair Reflects on Past
Among 13 children in a struggling Ivory Coast family, it would have been understandable if Vincent Oria went into business, apprenticed to a tradesman, or dreamed of the soccer pitch. Instead, long before becoming chairman of NJIT's Department of Computer Science, he followed his schoolteacher father into the world of academics, concentrating on physics as he loved the applied mathematics of science.
But there wasn't much opportunity for physicists in the West African nation of beaches and rainforests. A mentor suggested that he switch to computing as a pragmatic career alternative. He was…

Sayyid Ali '17 Among '30 Under 30' by Forbes for Corporate Diversity Startup
Sayyid Ali, a 2017 alumnus of NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing, recalled a job interview at a software company in New York where the only other Black person he saw was the elevator attendant — and now he's on a mission to prevent that from happening to anyone else.

The founders were all awarded Forbes 30-under-30 status for their accomplishment in the education sector.

Accenture Working with Institute for Data Science to Combat Software Supply Chain Attacks
Accenture, a leader in information consulting services, is collaborating with NJIT’s Institute for Data Science, led by Distinguished Prof. David Bader, to develop methods to mitigate risks arising in the use of open-source components in the software supply chain.
Modern cloud-based software is incredibly complex and often uses open-source code, which is cost-free and provides developers with countless libraries of prewritten functions. But that openness is also a risk, because anyone can change the code and it's not always clear who made the changes or what motivated them. A recent…
