NJIT Prof. Wins NSF CAREER Award to Study Quantum Material for Next-Gen Electronics
Tuesday, April 11, 2023
NJIT Assistant Professor of Physics Junjie Yang has won a National Science Foundation’s (NSF) CAREER Award to explore the unusual properties of quantum materials that hold the potential to propel the next generation of smaller, more energy-efficient electronic devices. The CAREER Award is among NSF’s most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education, and lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. Approximately 500 awards are issued each year nationally. As part of his five-...
NJIT Mathematics Professor Unveils Modeling Projections for MLB's 2023 Season
Wednesday, March 29, 2023
As baseball fans gear up for MLB’s Opening Day and the marathon of another 162-game season, new modeling predictions of NJIT mathematics professor Bruce Bukiet have already divined the winners and losers when the dust settles on the final day of the 2023 season in October. America’s pastime has always been a game obsessed with numbers, and Bukiet, an associate dean at NJIT’s College of Science and Liberal Arts, is no different — he has been his applying statistical models to forecast the MLB’s league standings with commendable accuracy for 25 years. Bukiet says his mathematical models...
Undergrads Compete in NJIT's First Lockheed Martin Ethics in Engineering Competition
Wednesday, March 29, 2023
Undergraduates Nora Mahgoub ’25 and Victoria Pirog ’25 are already solving complex ethical dilemmas of today’s engineering world, and doing so on a grand stage, as the first NJIT students to compete at Lockheed Martin’s annual Ethics in Engineering Competition. Mahgoub and Pirog recently joined other two-student teams from more than 70 U.S. colleges and universities at Lockheed Martin’s fifth annual case competition, held at its Center for Leadership Excellence in Bethesda, Md., Feb. 27 through March 1. The bracket-style, head-to-head competition, described by organizers as “compelling...
NJIT Hosts Conference Asking: 'How Can Artificial Intelligence Be a Force for Good?'
Friday, March 24, 2023
How can we prevent artificial intelligence from exacerbating systemic discrimination and leverage it as a force for good to promote social and environmental justice? Policy experts from organizations such as the Innocence Project, prominent data scientists and others will discuss the profound, but often silent role of AI in our lives at “Women Designing the Future: Artificial Intelligence/Real Human Lives,” an upcoming conference hosted by the Murray Center for Women in Technology at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Come interact with innovative scientists and social activists who...
Princeton Review Ranks NJIT a Top 50 School to Study Game Design
Wednesday, March 22, 2023
New Jersey Institute of Technology has again earned a spot on The Princeton Review’s top 50 undergraduate schools for game design in the 2023 rankings. The Princeton Review chose the schools based on its 2022 survey of administrators at 150 institutions across the U.S. and abroad offering game design courses, majors, or degree programs. The survey collected information in four areas: academics, faculty, technology, and career prospects. The company analyzed more than 40 survey data points to tally the rankings. “NJIT offers a comprehensive game design curriculum, whether it’s creating...
NJIT Names John Pelesko Provost and SVP for Academic Affairs
Monday, March 20, 2023
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has selected John Pelesko to serve as its next provost and senior vice president for academic affairs after a nationwide search. Pelesko, currently the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware (UD), will start on Aug. 1. Pelesko, an NJIT alumnus who earned a Ph.D. in mathematical sciences from the university, will seek to enhance NJIT’s educational programs and grow its research portfolio through federal, state and industry partnerships. More broadly, he’ll work closely with NJIT President Teik C. Lim and the Board of...
NJIT Student Unveils Shock Sunquake Discoveries at SC22 NASA Exhibit
Monday, March 13, 2023
NJIT Ph.D. physics student John Stefan has new findings about earthquake-like events on the Sun that have recently shaken up the world of space science during one of the biggest international conferences for high-performance computing of the year — the SC22 Supercomputing Conference. At SC22 in Dallas, TX, Stefan and NJIT physics professor Alexander Kosovichev showcased research at NASA's conference exhibit, which has offered surprising new details about how solar flares generate powerful sunquakes that ripple along the Sun’s surface, similar in effect to earthquakes. Stefan’s findings...
NJIT Launches PhD Program in Data Science
Friday, February 17, 2023
Today’s world is driven by data – and data science is what powers the engine in this rapidly expanding global ecosystem. To address the need for talent and knowledge in this emerging field, NJIT’s Departments of Data Science and Mathematical Sciences have launched a new Ph.D. in Data Science program, dedicated to growing the field and generating top-notch data scientists. The program offers a computing option and statistics option to accommodate different interest profiles, with some overlap between the two. The computing option, offered by the data science department, deals with the...
Startup Jobs Fair Connects NJIT Students to Local Entrepreneurs
Wednesday, February 15, 2023
NJIT's Entrepreneur Society hosts an annual startup job fair, providing students with the opportunity to pursue careers and meet directly with the founders of new local companies. Hundreds of students attend, many looking for the perfect match, while others were there to network or learn about the startup experience from the dozens of companies present. Aravindakshan Sarma, studying for an M.S. in information systems, said he's looking for a full-time job and prefers working at a startup rather than a large company. "I'm trying to see if I fit somewhere … Probably as a data analyst...
Researchers Discover Mysterious Source of 'Heartbeat-like' Radio Bursts in a Solar Flare
Wednesday, February 8, 2023
A solar radio burst with a signal pattern, akin to that of a heartbeat, has been pinpointed in the Sun’s atmosphere, according to a new study. In findings published in the journal Nature Communications, an international team of researchers has reported uncovering the source location of a radio signal coming from within a C-class solar flare more than 5,000 kilometers above the Sun’s surface. Researchers say the study’s findings could help scientists better understand the physical processes behind the energy release of solar flares — the solar system’s most powerful explosions. “The...
