Undergraduate Ecosystems: In Cyberspace with Social Bots
Thursday, April 5, 2018
Social Interaction Laboratory The Social Interaction Lab is an interdisciplinary research hub that combines psychology, communication, computing and design to understand how people interact with technology. The lab focuses in particular on studying technologies that are social, such as mobile-health apps, multiplayer games and social media. Many of the recent projects revolve around technology and mental health, including the development of a mobile app to support women in STEM, the use of bots to provide social support in virtual environments, and an examination of how algorithms and...
Power Up: Computing Student Publishes Hand-Drawn Game on Google Play
Friday, March 16, 2018
Prior to taking the game modification development course taught by University Lecturer D.J. Kehoe last spring, computer science major Angela Vitaletti ’18 had never developed or programmed a videogame before. “I would always bite off more than I could chew, and never finish,” said Vitaletti, who is from Middlesex and transferred to NJIT from Northampton Community College in Pennsylvania. “I took game mod as a way to motivate myself because it has real deadlines and projects that D.J. helps make achievable.” To guide the learning process and create a culture of accountability,...

Tuesday, March 13, 2018
NJIT has earned a No. 33 ranking on The Princeton Review's just-released list saluting the top 50 undergraduate schools for game design for 2018. The Princeton Review chose the schools based on its 2017 survey of 150 institutions in the U.S., Canada and abroad offering game design degree programs or courses. The 40-question survey gathered data on everything from the schools' game design academic offerings and lab facilities to their graduates’ starting salaries and career achievements. More than 40 data points in four areas (academics, faculty, technology and career) were analyzed to...

Computing Students Develop App to Enhance NJIT Parking Experience
Thursday, February 1, 2018
Ah, the struggles of commuter life. You know, the time-consuming process of gassing up the car, hitting the road and battling rush-hour traffic, only to reach your destination and have to hunt for parking. We’ve all been there. A recent study revealed that motorists waste about 100 hours a year looking for a parking space, which accounts for one-third of city traffic. What’s more, the excess vehicle miles traveled in search of parking has a widespread impact on the environment and increases driver frustration. Students in Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) have developed an app...

CDS reported a sharp increase in the number of co-op and internship placements facilitated through the career center in 2017. Nearly 900 students gained invaluable work experience, earning over $6.8 million in wages. Many said that through these internships, they had to step out of their comfort zones in order to excel. Others pointed out that...

PBS Conversations: NJIT's Michael Lee on Teaching the (Multicultural) World to Code
Wednesday, January 17, 2018
Michael Lee, an assistant professor of informatics who focuses on human-computer interaction, has invented a clever application to bridge the digital divide: a multi-level game called Gidget that teaches people of all ages and cultures to program by solving debugging puzzles. In a recent interview on the PBS talk show “Life & Living with Joanna Gagis,” Lee discusses his invention’s role in expanding and diversifying the computer-literate coding community. “When we think about equity in computer science, a lot of people tend to be males or white or Asian, and so we have a lot of...
