CodePath Fellows Help Train Their Peers to Develop Android Apps
Thursday, June 9, 2022
Two undergraduates have turned a free Android mobile app development course they took into a teaching moment through CodePath.org, a nonprofit organization that offers free software development courses at colleges and universities who support low-income computer science students. Kush Patel, a computer science major, and Kimia Naeiji, an information technology major, have just completed their second semester as student “professors” who teach fellow juniors and seniors how to conceptualize and execute a design for an Android app with market potential. The CodePath Android Studio...
'iRecommend' wins GfK's NextGen Data Science Hackathon
Tuesday, June 7, 2022
The idea for a service that would give buyers recommendations for products they cannot live without has won four computer science students in the Ying Wu College of Computing 1st place and a $5,000 grand prize as part of GfK’s annual NextGen Data Science Hackathon Competition. “iRecommend” is a proposed data-driven system for making FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) ecommerce experiences more personalized and relies on predictive analytics to recommend products to shoppers based on their purchase histories and individual characteristics. GfK challenged undergraduate students to develop...
Senior Success: Sam Itman's Passion Leads to Cybersecurity Career
Wednesday, May 4, 2022
Information technology student Sam Itman has long believed that knowledge and passion for technology can open doors as “it presents a world of opportunities to those who are willing to discover them.” For Itman, these opportunities have led to an impactful internship at Optum and a cybersecurity position with the federal government. Itman is a dean’s list student in NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing and member of the National Science Foundation’s CyberCorps Scholarship for Service program, part of the NJIT Secure Computing Initiative. The competitive scholarship program provides him the...
Informatics Professor Applies AI to Auto Traffic Simulation
Monday, April 25, 2022
Assistant Professor Hua Wei is studying how to build more realistic models for traffic simulation, with the goal of improving predictions by closing the gap between just following traffic laws vs. how people actually drive. That gap can be significant, so Wei is using the latest in artificial intelligence and reinforcement learning to help his cause, supported by a $175,000 research grant from the National Science Foundation. Wei explained that reinforcement learning has seen success in artificial intelligence domains such as virtual gaming where simulations are constructed...
Computing Students Provide Real-World Solutions for Bank of America in Capstone Project
Tuesday, April 12, 2022
Capstone projects, done in collaboration with companies, are a requirement for every senior in the Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), but two teams of students have exceeded expectations with a pair of solutions that Bank of America (BofA) counts as more than class projects. These technical innovations, which relate to the BofA workforce and customer satisfaction, were NJIT’s first assignment with the multinational investment bank. The results were met with such high praise that continuation projects are already in the works. Phase...
NJIT Is No. 1 in New Jersey to Study Game Design, Top 20 in the East
Tuesday, March 22, 2022
NJIT has been ranked the top school in New Jersey for students to study game design, according to Animation Career Review. NJIT also reached No. 20 for schools in the East. Housed within the Hiller College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) and Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC), NJIT’s game development program blends digital design and information technology curricula to offer students access to faculty and resources that cross disciplinary boundaries and cultivate innovation and creativity. Since 2013, Animation Career Review has published an annual game design ranking that considers...
IT Student Sam Itman Helps Modernize Optum
Monday, March 14, 2022
Some might say that Sam Itman’s direction in life was preordained by his last name, as this “IT man” has had a passion for technology since childhood. He states that he became infatuated with technology because “it presents a world of opportunities to those who are willing to discover them.” As a senior B.S. in Information Technology student (with a business minor), he has already been successful in implementing phase two of his professional goals – literally – as part of an international team of interns who developed ways to optimize Optum Technology’s pharmacy benefit and health care...
US News and World Report Ranks NJIT Online Programs Top 100 Nationally, Top 3 Statewide
Tuesday, January 25, 2022
Three of NJIT's online graduate programs placed among the top 100 in this year's U.S. News & World Report rankings of American universities, and in the top three for New Jersey institutions. More colleges and universities than ever before began offering distance learning options in response to COVID-19. However, NJIT has long offered both fully online and partial, or hybrid, online degree programs as part of the university’s vision of a global campus. NJIT was recognized in 2021 for its technological innovations and digital transformation initiatives. The publication ranked...
David Bader Named ACM Fellow for Career in Data Science and Supercomputing
Thursday, January 20, 2022
The ACM has announced NJIT Distinguished Professor David Bader in its new class of Fellows. Bader received the honor along with 70 peers in the computing industry, representing just 1% of Association for Computing Machinery membership. "The contributions of the 2021 Fellows run the gamut of the computing field — including cloud database systems, deep learning acceleration, high performance computing, robotics, and theoretical computer science," ACM President Gabriele Kotsis stated. "I reflect on the citation 'for contributions to high-performance computing systems, graph analytics,...
Salam Daher Wins Tech Innovator Award for Healthcare Simulation
Wednesday, January 19, 2022
Salam Daher, assistant professor of informatics, this week received the Society for Simulation in Healthcare's Technology Innovator of the Year award in recognition of four projects addressing patient simulation. Daher joined NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing in 2019 to continue her research at the intersection of computing and healthcare simulation, education and practitioner. She's been working on a patient simulator combining physical and virtual elements, a remote interactive video simulator, digital assistants as customizable patients and new ways to measure wounds in 3D....
