Ying Wu College of Computing
Ying Wu College of Computing
Computing Dean Elected to National Academy of Inventors
Tuesday, December 11, 2018
At NJIT, Craig Gotsman is best known as dean of Ying Wu College of Computing. Within the scientific community, he is better known as the inventor of a number of cutting-edge software technologies for manipulating 3D geometric data, enabling their use in a variety of applications. Many of these technologies have been patented and commercialized, some through startup companies, which Gotsman founded — spinoffs of his academic research. In recognition of these achievements, Gotsman has been named a Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Inventors (NAI) for 2018. Election to NAI Fellow status...
Computer Science Professor's Startup Attracts Millions in Investment From Industry Leaders
Wednesday, December 5, 2018
A startup company co-founded by a NJIT Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) professor recently received a substantial investment from a startup foundry supported by industry giants including Microsoft and AT&T. Duality Technologies, launched in 2016 by Associate Professor Kurt Rohloff and four partners, develops an innovative cryptographic technology called “homomorphic encryption” to enable organizations to encrypt their data so that computations may be performed on the data in its encrypted form. Keeping the data encrypted provides an extra layer of protection for companies,...
NJIT's Game Development Program Preps Students for Careers in Diverse Fields
Friday, November 30, 2018
Housed within the School of Art + Design and Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC), NJIT’s game development program blends digital design and information technology curriculums to offer students access to faculty and resources that cross disciplinary boundaries and cultivate innovation and creativity. Here, Glenn Goldman, founding director of the School of Art + Design, discusses the uniqueness of the university’s multidisciplinary program, and what kind of students fit the mold — and explains why an assemblage of disciplines will continue to unite the world of game...
NJIT Advances Research, Commerce and Security Through Global Partnerships
Thursday, November 29, 2018
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has reached out to giants in the field of cryptography nearly 7,000 miles away to advance blockchain, an evolving digital security technology designed to enable enterprises both large and small to expand transactions across borders, supply chains and diverse stakeholder groups. In a recently announced partnership, NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing has joined forces with JD.com, China’s largest retailer, and the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ISCAS) to pursue fundamental improvements in consensus protocols, privacy...
NJIT Launches A Potent Research Hub: The Institute for Space Weather Sciences
Wednesday, November 28, 2018
Both on land and in space, Earth’s technology-centered civilization is increasingly vulnerable to the powerful bursts of electromagnetic radiation, energetic charged particles and magnetized plasma known as space weather. As the complexity of engineered systems increases, as new technologies are invented and deployed, and as humans venture ever further beyond Earth’s surface, both human-built systems and humans themselves become more susceptible to the effects of the planet’s space environment. It is with these vulnerabilities in mind – and in response to urgent calls from government...
NJIT Launches Corporate Data Science and Analytics Training Program
Friday, November 16, 2018
Addressing a critical need in today’s data-driven world, the Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) at NJIT now offers a training program in Data Science and Analytics, tailored to those developing and using this technology in the corporate world. This fall three YWCC professors delivered a three-course version of the program at the United Parcel Service (UPS) campus in Parsippany, N.J. Each of the courses is a “boot camp” experience - employees learn technological concepts in lecture sessions, then practice their new skills in a series of hands-on exercises using state-of-the-art software...
Meet Ying Wu College of Computing's New Department Chairs
Friday, November 2, 2018
This fall, NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC) welcomed two new department chairs: Frank Biocca, chair of the informatics department, and Baruch Schieber, chair of the computer science department. Biocca and Schieber bring a vast array of experience and knowledge to NJIT. “I am delighted to have such accomplished scientists and administrators, with such diverse backgrounds, on the college leadership team,” said YWCC Dean Craig Gotsman. “Both Baruch and Frank will be key players in implementing my vision for the future of the college, growing it to be an important bridge between...
East Coast Meets West Coast at Honors College Virtual Networking Event
Wednesday, October 31, 2018
On a Wednesday afternoon, in a handful of rooms along the second-floor corridor of Albert Dorman Honors College, NJIT students and alumni networked, albeit not in person. The five participating alumni appeared on screen via Webex from the West Coast for the college’s Virtual Silicon Valley Networking event, interacting with and answering questions from small groups of students that rotated from room to room every 15 minutes. Alumni Maria Karim ’05 Honors, a manager at Topcon (also formerly of Intel); Salman Naqvi ’10 Honors, a display exploration engineer with Apple; Phong Pham ’10 Honors...
Researchers Create AI Project on Display at 4th Istanbul Design Biennial
Tuesday, October 30, 2018
How well do you know your whereabouts? Better yet, how does one get acquainted with a new location when traveling or relocating? A team of researchers at NJIT has created aplace-based artificial intelligence project that helps denizens expand their knowledge of the city of Istanbul. “[AI]stanbul has been designed as a curious machine that aims to be a virtual native,” explains the [AI]stanbul team about the installation on display at the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, Sept. 22 – Nov 4. “By asking questions to people — inhabitants, visitors, tourists — about Istanbul, aims...
