In 2023, there are still a wealth of career opportunities in industries for students who demonstrate the right combination of ability, acumen, and soft skills. Such was the case for many Ying Wu College of Computing Students (YWCC) students who attended a fall on-campus recruitment event and subsequently were offered either full-time positions or internships with Bank of America in the next few months.

Among 13 children in a struggling Ivory Coast family, it would have been understandable if Vincent Oria went into business, apprenticed to a tradesman, or dreamed of the soccer pitch. Instead, long before becoming chairman of NJIT's Department of Computer Science, he followed his schoolteacher father into the world of academics, concentrating on physics as he loved the applied mathematics of science.

NJIT’s Career Development Services hosted its marquee event, again besting attendance and participation numbers over its previous career fair. Taking a page out of the logistics-improvement playbook of participating companies like UPS, Johnson & Johnson, Raytheon and others, CDS implemented changes to improve candidate and employer efficiency and experience.

Today’s world is driven by data – and data science is what powers the engine in this rapidly expanding global ecosystem. To address the need for talent and knowledge in this emerging field, NJIT’s Departments of Data Science and Mathematical Sciences have launched a new Ph.D. in Data Science program, dedicated to growing the field and generating top-notch data scientists.

NJIT's Entrepreneur Society hosts an annual startup job fair, providing students with the opportunity to pursue careers and meet directly with the founders of new local companies.

Hundreds of students attend, many looking for the perfect match, while others were there to network or learn about the startup experience from the dozens of companies present.

Aravindakshan Sarma, studying for an M.S. in information systems, said he's looking for a full-time job and prefers working at a startup rather than a large company.

Sayyid Ali, a 2017 alumnus of NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing, recalled a job interview at a software company in New York where the only other Black person he saw was the elevator attendant — and now he's on a mission to prevent that from happening to anyone else.

Accenture, a leader in information consulting services, is collaborating with NJIT’s Institute for Data Science, led by Distinguished Prof. David Bader, to develop methods to mitigate risks arising in the use of open-source components in the software supply chain.

NJIT’s Department of Data Science in the Ying Wu College of Computing is launching two new graduate programs in artificial intelligence during the 2023 academic year, in support of the increasing demand for qualified AI engineers and analysts to facilitate problem-solving and decision-making in the digital world of the future.

The new programs will address the dramatic growth and proliferation of AI technologies into the mainstream, such as the recent debut of the ChatGPT application.

New Jersey Institute of Technology is now ranked fourth in the nation for its M.S. in Cybersecurity and online M.S. in Data Science, according to Fortune magazine.
