An Egyptian-American Engineer Does it Her Way. Intel Approves.
Friday, December 21, 2018
For Dina Ayman’s parents, the road to medical school beckoned enticingly to their gifted daughter, a driven student with a love for math and science. The profession, they argued, would eagerly welcome a woman of her talents. But Ayman ’18, M.S. ’18, did not hear that call. And she resisted. “From the seventh grade, my dream was to become an engineer, because I enjoyed studying math and physics and that’s what engineering meant to me,” she recalls, adding that she kept the dream alive despite her parents’ concerns that “engineering is not a field for girls and that the world might not allow...
Electrical Engineering Program Earns "Best for Vets" 2019 Accolade
Monday, December 17, 2018
College Factual, a leading source of higher education analytics and insights, has ranked NJIT in the top 10 percent of all schools in the nation when it comes to offering a quality education to veterans studying electrical engineering. NJIT’s electrical engineering program is ranked #27 out of 269 for veteran friendliness of all colleges and universities reviewed by College Factual. NJIT improved its ranking position 5 slots over the previous year’s ranking of #32. Statewide, NJIT's electrical engineering program ranks #2 for the second year in a row. “NJIT continues to...
East Coast Meets West Coast at Honors College Virtual Networking Event
Wednesday, October 31, 2018
On a Wednesday afternoon, in a handful of rooms along the second-floor corridor of Albert Dorman Honors College, NJIT students and alumni networked, albeit not in person. The five participating alumni appeared on screen via Webex from the West Coast for the college’s Virtual Silicon Valley Networking event, interacting with and answering questions from small groups of students that rotated from room to room every 15 minutes. Alumni Maria Karim ’05 Honors, a manager at Topcon (also formerly of Intel); Salman Naqvi ’10 Honors, a display exploration engineer with Apple; Phong Pham ’10 Honors...
TEDxNJIT Event on November 8
Tuesday, October 9, 2018
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will host a TEDxNJIT event Nov. 8, 2018 in the Jim Wise Theatre on the NJIT campus and via an accompanying live simulcast available to viewers worldwide. The independently organized event, licensed by TED, is themed “ReFraming” and will feature leaders from business, academia and the arts addressing a range of topics. Speakers will explore assumptions that limit solutions to social problems and broadening perspectives to find new opportunities for cross cutting approaches. They will cover a range of disciplines including arts,...
Transforming Newark One Classroom, One Conversation, One Carrot at a Time
Sunday, September 9, 2018
As towering cranes and forklifts shuttled brightly colored containers from ships to trucks in Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal last week, Cameron Bennett ’22 was also busy inside the port loading human-scale cargo to go back out to sea. Bennett, one of the 1065 freshmen to disperse across the Newark metro area on NJIT’s annual First Year Service Day, was packing beautiful hand-knit hats and scarves and toiletries into hand-sewn bags at the Seamen’s Church Institute, a nearly 200-year-old organization serving mariners dispatched across the globe. He was struck to learn that...
NJIT Researchers Aim to Build Brain-Inspired Computing Systems
Friday, July 6, 2018
Two NJIT researchers, working with collaborators from the IBM Research Zurich Laboratory and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, have demonstrated a novel synaptic architecture that could lead to a new class of information processing systems inspired by the brain. The findings are an important step toward building more energy-efficient computing systems that also are capable of learning and adaptation in the real world. They were published in a paper in the journal Nature Communications. The researchers, Bipin Rajendran, an associate professor of electrical and computer...
Who's Who? NJIT's Atam Dhawan!
Friday, June 29, 2018
Dr. Atam P. Dhawan, NJIT’s senior vice provost for research, received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who's Who, the nearly 120-year-old publisher of biographies, for his leadership in the fields of engineering and higher education. The award recognizes people who have “achieved greatness” in their industry, excelling for at least 20 years. As a researcher, Dhawan, a distinguished professor of electrical and computer engineering at NJIT and a pioneer in the field of point-of-care technologies in healthcare, focuses on optical imaging devices....
A Gathering of Go-getters: NJIT Celebrates 2017-2018 Scholarship Recipients
Friday, June 15, 2018
The competition for scholarships and fellowships grows fiercer every year. Still, there’s good news: At NJIT, students are increasingly receiving notable awards that provide opportunities to do research, study abroad (both, in certain cases) and more. Just as the spring 2018 semester was coming to a close, a small reception was held in Eberhardt Hall to congratulate the university’s scholarship and fellowship recipients over the past year. While some have completed their assignments, others are either in the midst of or preparing for them. Here, we meet a few of the winners. Axel...

NJIT Car Maven Takes on the American Solar Challenge, Then It's Off to Tesla
Friday, June 1, 2018
Jason Murzello’s fascination with cars began in a fairly typical way – with his own matchbox set – but then veered into technology by way of video games such as “Need for Speed,” which allow budding aficionados to tinker with performance by switching out not only tires, but suspensions and engines as well. Add another layer, the chance to build a real, solar car from scratch in a garage a block from campus, and you have the makings of a career. This summer, the 2018 electrical engineering graduate will begin working in a New Jersey Tesla dealership, where, as a technician, he will...
