Rojas-Cessa, Yaramothu Named Senior Members of National Academy of Inventors
Tuesday, July 16, 2024
NJIT engineering professors Roberto Rojas-Cessa and Chang Yaramothu are among the newest senior members in the National Academy of Inventors and the only two from New Jersey in their class. Rojas-Cessa is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and a leader of NJIT’s Hispanic/Latino Employee Resource Group. He joined the university in 2001 and studies energy systems and networking. Yaramothu is an assistant professor of biomedical engineering. He earned his B.S. at NJIT in 2013, stayed here for graduate school and made his career as a Highlander. “We are very proud of Chang...
Sunblock for Solar Panels: NJIT Startup Merges Data, Material Science
Thursday, June 20, 2024
Materium Technologies, a startup company with deep NJIT roots, is bringing data science innovations into the slowly evolving field of solar energy panels. Startups are always a gamble, but the Materium team has a good hand, with two pair of Highlanders — recent alumni Sheldon Fereira (M.S. ‘23) and Scott Daniel (M.S. ‘24), advised by Professor Nuggehalli Ravindra and Adjunct Instructor Michael Jaffe. Their collective scientific expertise spans the worlds of artificial intelligence, applied physics, biomedical engineering, and semiconductors. Their idea evolved throughout 2023 and the...
US News & World Report Ranks 2 NJIT Graduate Programs in Top 100 Nationally
Tuesday, June 18, 2024
The latest graduate studies rankings from U.S. News & World Report continue to boost the national standing of New Jersey Institute of Technology in the fields of engineering and computer science, with both programs ranking in the top 100. NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering (NCE) ranks No. 80 on the publication’s list of the Best Engineering Schools in the U.S. — the ninth consecutive year that NCE has made the top 100. “NJIT’s enduring placement in the top 100 reflects our intentional investment in hiring first-rate faculty, building and maintaining world-class research facilities...
AI-Powered Exoskeleton Enhances Human Locomotion, Helps Restores Mobility
Wednesday, June 12, 2024
A team of researchers have demonstrated a new method that leverages AI and computer simulations to train robotic exoskeletons that can help users save energy while walking, running, and climbing stairs. Described in a study published in Nature, the novel method rapidly develops exoskeleton controllers to assist locomotion without relying on lengthy human-involved experiments. Moreover, the method can apply to a wide variety of assistive devices beyond the hip exoskeleton demonstrated in this research. “It can also apply to knee or ankle exoskeletons, or other multi-joint exoskeletons,”...
Owen West Wins Goldwater Prize for His Role in Studying Self-Assembling Peptides
Monday, May 20, 2024
His lifelong passion for baseball led Owen West, a rising junior from Point Pleasant Beach majoring in biomedical engineering, to dive into pharmaceutical research and become one of two NJIT winners of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for 2024. Growing up, all West wanted to do is pitch. “My entire life goal was a plan to be in the Major Leagues,” he said. He threw left-handed and grew to 6-feet, 6-inches, giving him two vital tools to make that dream come true. But upon joining NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors college, he confirmed a nagging feeling that the worldview of student-...
NJIT's 2024 Master's and Doctoral Class Make Their Mark
Wednesday, May 15, 2024
New Jersey Institute of Technology served up a full day of fanfare as its advanced degree graduates walked across the stage in the Wellness and Events Center in three commencement ceremonies on May 15. The 2024 class comprises more than 1,400 graduates and reflects the institution’s steady growth and upward trajectory. NJIT Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs John Pelesko, participating in his first commencement exercises as provost, called the ceremonies to order. Pelesko, himself a 1997 alumnus of NJIT as the very first Ph.D. graduate in mathematical sciences, implored...
Undergrad's Research Journey from Colombia to NJIT Sparks Goldwater Success
Tuesday, April 30, 2024
Danna Valentina Sanchez Hernandez '25 took a big leap leaving her home country of Colombia to pursue her undergrad studies in the U.S., but that journey is paying off at NJIT — her research exploring the fluid dynamics and locomotion of marine life has recently led to a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. This year’s Goldwater class is comprised of just 438 scholars from across the U.S. “It’s exciting to receive such recognition because I see it as an acknowledgment of my work as a young researcher,” said Hernandez, a biomedical engineering major originally from Ibagué, Colombia. “I’m...
MakeNJIT, in Second Year, Focuses on Infrastructure Hardware Hacks
Wednesday, April 24, 2024
An all-freshman team, Rackify, was the top NJIT winner and third overall at this year’s MakeNJIT hardware hackathon, creating a smart bicycle rack that automatically locks your ride by activating an RFID reader and extending an arm through the spokes or frame. Rackify members Raghav Bharath, Prabhav Sharma and Tanush Tammanagoudar (electrical and computer engineering), Burhan Naveed (computer science) and Matthew Levine (mechanical engineering) came up with the idea in response to MakeNJIT’s themes of smart- and urban infrastructure. The device could be retrofitted to traditional bike...
NJIT's Dana Knox Research Showcase Celebrates Future Visionary Leaders
Friday, April 19, 2024
NJIT’s annual celebration of its top student researchers kicked off at the 2024 Dana Knox Student Research Showcase, which once again highlighted a stunning array of innovation and discovery from every corner of the STEM disciplines. Now in its 19th year, the showcase competition featured 68 diverse research projects presented by students from NJIT’s six colleges at the university Campus Center. As always, Dana Knox presenters had the chance to connect with the campus community to explain the significant impact of research endeavors they’ve spent their undergraduate and graduate studies...
NJIT Undergraduate Researchers Secure Prestigious Goldwater Scholarships
Monday, April 15, 2024
From an estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors, two NJIT students — Danna Valentina Sanchez Hernandez and Owen West — have been named Goldwater Scholars this year by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The scholarship is recognized as among the country’s most prestigious for STEM undergraduates pursuing research careers. The NJIT Goldwater Scholars represent two of 10 statewide, and 438 total students across the United States represented by 227 institutions. Goldwater Scholars each earn a prize of up to $7,500 per year for up to two...
