NJIT's David Jones Recognized as a Top 15 Champion of Diversity in 2023
In a testament to his commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB), David E. Jones, chief diversity officer at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), has been honored as one of the "2023 Top 15 Champions of Diversity" by DiversityGlobal Magazine. This recognition celebrates individuals who not only articulate the importance of DEIB but also actively implement measures to create a more inclusive world within and beyond their organizational spheres.
Jones, a versatile DEIB executive, consultant, coach, educator and leader, has made himself a visible presence at NJIT by creating and championing DEIB initiatives with a holistic and evidence-based approach such as establishing the Committee on Inclusive Excellence, the annual DEIB University Forum, and developing the infrastructure for the newly formed Office of Inclusive Excellence.
One of Jones' noteworthy achievements is the development of robust DEIB workshops which helps build DEIB capacity among faculty and staff and improves student success outcomes while also encouraging faculty and staff to critically analyze and assess the impact of DEIB initiatives in and out of the classroom. This commitment to transparency and accountability is reflected in NJIT's mission where diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging are cornerstones of the university’s identity.
“I’m particularly struck by his energy and enthusiasm for creating an inclusive campus climate here in Newark in which every individual can thrive,” NJIT President Teik C. Lim said.
Jones is also committed to inclusive hiring practices and working in partnership with colleagues at NJIT to improve diverse hiring practices and cultivating a more diverse talent pool within NJIT, particularly among its faculty.
Jones' influence in higher education extends beyond NJIT. He has played a pivotal role in shaping DEIB training and curriculum design, equipping individuals with the knowledge and tools to champion inclusion and equity. Jones co-founded the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Ujima Institute, a forward-thinking program designed to empower Black and African American higher education professionals aspiring to senior student affairs officer roles and faculty positions.
Furthermore, since 2018, Jones has served as a teaching faculty member at the Equity Institute at the University of Southern California Race and Equity Center. In this role, he not only educates but also coaches participants in the Racial Equity Coaching Academy, empowering them to effect positive change in their organizations.
Jones' commitment to DEIB has garnered him recognition as a Chief Diversity Fellow for the National Association for Diversity Officers in Higher Education for 2023-2024. This distinction underscores his status as a thought leader in the field.
“His commitment for DEIB and creating an environment where everyone feels like they belong adds significant value to our NJIT community, particularly at a time where NJIT is rapidly becoming increasing more diverse,” NJIT Chief Government and Community Relations Officer Angela Garretson said, who also played a role in supporting Jones’ nomination for this prestigious award.
By honoring Jones as one of the "2023 Top 15 Champions of Diversity," the publication celebrates not only his accomplishments but also his profound impact on creating a more inclusive and equitable world.
