Having grown exponentially over the last decade, the city of Newark continues to burgeon as a mecca of architectural rebirth, thanks in part to creatives like College of Architecture and Design (CoAD) alum Kyle Rendall ’07.

Contrary to popular belief, the world of interior design isn’t all pillow fluffing, couch shopping and paint sampling. “Sure, it’s a part of the job, but it goes far beyond that,” insists Elouie Gaspar. “I feel like anyone can decorate, but not everyone has the skills to design a space. We care about the infrastructure of the building. We care about plumbing. We care about electrical. It’s not just about does this couch go with this wall.” Destined for Design

Clad in bright red T-shirts, teetering on stepladders in a cordoned off section of Livingston Mall, a team of designers from Gensler’s Morristown branch work together to build a massive mailbox constructed entirely from canned goods. It’s “Build Day,” and they’ve been stacking and arranging and lining and readjusting cans of tuna since 7:30 a.m. It’s now nearing 6 p.m., and they’ve only just begun to tackle the hardest part of the project: constructing the curve of the mailbox.

The interior design program at the School of Art + Design—which joined the New Jersey School of Architecture to form the College of Architecture and Design at NJIT in 2008—has recently been ranked #13 nationally by DesignIntelligence.

As a researcher, Kevin Belfield is working at the forefront of medical innovation to develop a minimally invasive imaging technique that could revolutionize how wound healing and the growth of cancerous tissue are monitored. A professor in the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science, Belfield is also dean of the College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA), and in this role he is helping to build the success of programs that span a very broad spectrum of research and education at NJIT.

Associate Professor Eric Fortune, a member of the Department of Biological Sciences since 2012, is an explorer whose research is focused on finding answers to questions at the frontiers of human physiology and behavior. In his Central King Building laboratory, with the assistance of undergraduate and graduate students, Fortune is challenging the unknowns of how the brain uses sensory information to control behavior. It’s a search that has also taken him far from the NJIT campus, to wilderness locations in South America.

Since coming to NJIT in 1994, Professor Eliza Michalopoulou has been listening to the world’s oceans, researching how new knowledge about sound propagation in the marine environment can enhance the U.S. Navy’s antisubmarine defenses. But the analytical tools she uses have other applications as well, including the potential to yield greater understanding of oceanic pollution patterns and climate change. A Good Match

Lego building blocks and a chance conversation at a scientific conference have led to a discovery about water droplets on the International Space Station (ISS) with down-to-earth applications that could range from the production of better inkjet printers to more precise techniques for manufacturing polymer fibers and microelectronic devices, and improvements in mass spectrometry.

For Christopher Domey ’16, the decision to attend NJIT was an easy one. His brother was already enrolled as a student and the campus was close to home, thereby allowing him to stay in contact with friends and family. “In order to be sure I had a private space where I could get away from the distractions at home, I made sure to live on campus for my first three years of NJIT,” Domey said. “This proved to be invaluable.”
