Whole Foods Market, Chipotle and Hotel Indigo – Newark’s first boutique hotel – have all served as signifiers of urban revitalization in New Jersey’s largest city.

The research that Assistant Professor of Physics Cristiano Dias is pursuing has the potential to expand our knowledge of phenomena that can affect the creation of dangerous obstructions in undersea pipelines transporting natural gas and the formation of protein-based fibers in the brain related to diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Learning is very much a hands-on experience for Nicole Andanar, Hannah Gattuso, Yasmine Ghattas and David Liptsyn, NJIT undergraduates enrolled in Albert Dorman Honors College who are working with Associate Professor Eric Fortune, Department of Biological Sciences, to explore the unknowns of how the brain uses sensory information to influence behavior.

A chorus of oohs and ahs erupted from the room last winter when Joseph Cavanaugh revealed Gourmet Dining Services’ (GDS) next feat: a waffle iron complete with an NJIT logo. The students could barely contain themselves. Who would’ve thought the idea of creating a school-spirited custom design on one’s breakfast would beget such wide-eyed enthusiasm?

They build bridges and tunnels, measure two millimeters long, and are unwelcome at picnics. Ants, one of nature’s most minuscule and fascinating creatures, are the subject of a children’s book by civil engineer Harry N. Tuvel P.E., P.P.’74, ’79.

For Daniel A. Henderson '11 HON, whose art explores the viral allure of technology and its unintended consequences, the relocation of three of his sculptures to the ground floor of NJIT’s New Jersey Innovation Institute represents a homecoming of sorts. “Fossil Fuel” (2009), “Yellowstone” (2009) and “Premo” (2011) are now situated in an expansive new venue that allows spectators to fully appreciate the scope and grandeur of his work.

Thumb through Jihad Peoples’ LinkedIn page and you’ll find a list of causes he supports, from civil rights and social action to disaster and humanitarian relief, poverty alleviation and economic empowerment. It’s no surprise the School of Art + Design student opted to spend his spring break half a world away in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana tilling soil, mixing concrete and sweating bullets in 100-degree weather.
