Continuing its positive trajectory of campus and community development, NJIT hosted today the launch of Phase 1 of the NJIT Campus Gateway MLK Project. “We are very excited about what this project will do for University Heights, NJIT, and the City of Newark as a whole,” said Joel S. Bloom, President of NJIT.

Since the Human Genome Project was completed in 2003, the race toward the next era of patient care — genomic medicine — was on. However, advances in being able to treat patients based on their genetic information have also reshaped the training needed for nearly three million nurses in the U.S., who now require deeper working knowledge of cardiovascular genetics and cutting-edge diagnostic technology, in addition to the traditional medical skills they routinely apply on the hospital floor.

Success in a Snapshot: Jaasrini Vellore*, a biomedical engineering student who specializes in biomaterials, was honored at the 2018 NCE Salute to Excellence as the Madame Mau Outstanding Female Engineering Student. Although she’s a junior, Vellore’s accomplishments – from a 3.96 GPA, to a key role mentoring freshmen in her department, to research on a longstanding problem with hearing aids, to hospital internships – wowed the committee nonetheless.

Last fall NJIT entered into a first-of-its-kind partnership with IBM Global University Programs to deliver digital technologies and education to NJIT students. Not only is NJIT the first university in the country to adopt the venerable technology corporation’s IBM Skills Academy, it also is the only one in North America to do so.

NJIT women's tennis players Amanda Helminsky and Mayar Eltony were named to the 2018 ASUN Second-Team All-Conference the league office announced on the eve of the ASUN Women's Tennis Tournament. Eltony, a 2017 ASUN All-Freshmen Team and first-team honoree, tabs second-team honors at No. 2 singles while Helminsky posts her first postseason award at No. 5 singles. Blake Brancato broke the 5K record at the 2018 Larry Ellis Invitational held at Princeton Friday. The senior was the only Highlander participant at the invite. Brancato broke the 5K record coming in first with a time of 14:45.48, three seconds faster than the second place finisher from Villanova.

This month, the work of NJIT’s top student researchers was put on display at the 2018 Knox Student Research Showcase, “A Glimpse Into the Future”. The showcase, which annually honors outstanding research done at NJIT by its graduate and undergraduate students, awarded Najmaddin Akhundov first place among this year’s graduate researchers for developing a computational model to track and control invasive species that threaten the environment.

With cherry blossoms at peak season, more than 200 members of the Newark College of Engineering (NCE) community gathered this week at Nanina’s in Branch Brook Park to pay tribute to their own – high-flying seniors setting off on careers, alumni who have already made their mark on the world, and professors, staff and friends of the university who inspire and support ambitious NJIT engineers year after year.

NJIT, one of the nation’s leading public technological universities, will offer a new program this fall that puts students on the fast track to earn a master’s degree in one of six graduate programs offered by the Department of Computer Science at Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC).
