Chemical engineering major Jennifer Callaghan is spending her summer on the NJIT campus working to help define the next generation of ballistic materials. Laura Gould, an architecture student, is also at the university during the summer break, using Google Street View to study the correlation between urban infrastructure and the use and creation of sacred space in Italy.

A group of 11th graders traveled from their chemistry class at Dwyer Technical Academy in Elizabeth, N.J. to the center of atoms and molecules. Eager to explore this foreign dimension environed by electron orbits, the voyagers clutched atoms, felt them vibrate and got up close and personal with particles as they morphed into molecules. The students assessed radioactivity trends and learned the difference between solids, gases and liquids — and were back in time for the next class period.

NJIT, one of the few public polytechnic institutes in the Northeast, is once again included in the latest edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges — a subjective and selective reference tool that systematically reviews over 300 colleges in the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. For more than 30 years, millions of students, parents, and guidance counselors have relied on the Fiske Guide to Colleges to present the best and most interesting schools during their college search.

Two NJIT researchers, working with collaborators from the IBM Research Zurich Laboratory and the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, have demonstrated a novel synaptic architecture that could lead to a new class of information processing systems inspired by the brain.

The Academy of the International Council for Small Business (ICSB) is an intensive, weeklong entrepreneurship boot camp. Sponsored by ICSB, the world’s oldest academic organization dedicated to entrepreneurship, the Academy guides students through diverse aspects of entrepreneurship, including opportunity discovery, business model validation, digital marketing and sales — all in the context of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

With $18 billion in revenue in 2017, the multinational engineering firm AECOM has been named by Fortune Magazine as one of the World’s Most Admired Companies for three years running. In the spring semester of 2017, eight NJIT graduate students took part in AECOM’s first intrapreneurship competition.

The Spring 2018 Career Fair held this past February at NJIT’s new Wellness and Events Center (WEC) was alumna Whitney Randolph’s first time back on campus since she graduated from the university with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering in 2017. The reason for her visit was not to look for a job, but rather to find job candidates, as a recruiter for her employer, Getinge. Randolph is a production engineer at the global medical technology company.

A yearly tradition of regional computer science department chairs sharing teaching methods, demonstrating new research and awarding high-quality teaching continued on the campus of NJIT in June.

Dr. Atam P. Dhawan, NJIT’s senior vice provost for research, received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Who's Who, the nearly 120-year-old publisher of biographies, for his leadership in the fields of engineering and higher education. The award recognizes people who have “achieved greatness” in their industry, excelling for at least 20 years.
