By: Rosanna Dent, Assistant Professor of History Every year, with the dry season, come the researchers. They arrive with audio recorders, microscopes and glucose meters. They bring backpacks filled with GPS recorders, cameras and field notebooks. They ask endless streams of questions about how to live in the Cerrado of Central Brazil. The Xavante community members who receive and host us are long accustomed to these visits.

Smartphone owners who unlock their devices with knock codes aren't as safe as they think, according to researchers from NJIT, the George Washington University (GW) and Ruhr University Bochum in Germany. Knock codes work by letting people select patterns to tap on a phone’s locked screen. LG popularized the method in 2014, and now there are approximately 700,000 people using this method in the U.S. alone, along with one million downloads worldwide of clone applications for Google Android devices generally, the researchers said.

Although quiet this year due to the pandemic, summer has traditionally been a busy time at NJIT. Everyone in the NJIT community is invited to discuss racism and social injustice, as part of virtual forums on July 8 and July 17. The first event is organized by university administration while the second is student-led. Both cited inspiration from the Black Lives Matter movement and nationwide protests about Black men and women being killed by police and even targeted by private citizens, after committing only minor crimes if any at all.

More than 20 employers have been recognized by NJIT’s Career Development Services (CDS) as the university’s top recruitment partners, based on their 2019 hiring numbers. The honors mark the seventh consecutive year that CDS has paid tribute to employers for their engagement with and recruitment and hiring of students.

Despite being such a tiny earth dweller, the roundworm species Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) has become one of the biggest workhorses in the lab for biological researchers. Due in part to the organism’s transparent skin and compact size — just about the size of a comma at 1 mm in length — it’s the only animal to have successfully had a complete mapping of its connectome, or its neural circuitry comprised of 302 neurons and their 7,000 synaptic connections.

The New Jersey Chemistry Olympics (NJCO) has become an NJIT springtime tradition — for more than three decades, scores of young chemists prepare throughout the year for the competition, culminating on campus in a one-day test of wits among high school teams from across the state.

For much of her career, Oya Tukel, dean of NJIT’s Martin Tuchman School of Management and a professor of supply chain management, has researched problems in resource-constrained project scheduling that can cause significant delays, particularly for large, complex projects that require thousands of activities.
