For the students behind The CommonHealth Project — a collaborative, community-based initiative aimed at rallying volunteers for production and distribution of urgently needed personal protective equipment (PPE) — the pandemic is deeply personal. Mark Pothen ’22, a mechanical engineering major at NJIT, for example, hears stories from his mother, a physician working on the front line at Mountainside Hospital.

“It’s a little bittersweet to have to leave without being able to say proper goodbyes to everyone,” lamented Sravya Vegunta, a senior Albert Dorman Honors College (ADHC) scholar, about graduating from NJIT during the coronavirus pandemic. “But I’m definitely glad to be moving on to that next stage, because it’s something that I’ve been looking forward to for so long,” she added, speaking from her Monroe Township home where she is staying inside with her parents and younger brother.

Biochemistry senior Alejandra Lopez-Diaz hasn’t wasted much time during her past three years at NJIT. Outside of class, she’s spent most of her free hours inside the university’s labs researching an aspect of time itself — our circadian clock, or the internal biological clock that helps takes us through various phases of the day from morning to night.

A recent graduate in computer science played a small but important role in fixing the city of Newark's problem of lead in its public water supply. The student, Sammy Faraj, did his part by developing a database and mobile application for Newark-based Roman E&G Corp., which needed to organize photographs of where its workers were replacing outdated lead pipes with modern copper ones for the city government’s remediation project.

As a third-generation Highlander, mechanical engineering student and Albert Dorman Honors Scholar Greg Tanis looks forward to joining L3Harris as a systems engineer and takes a minute to reflect on his time at NJIT. Congratulations, Greg!

Three NJIT Athletic programs were recognized in the NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program for the 2018-19 academic year for ranking in the top 10% for Academic Progress Rate (APR) in their respective sport the NCAA announced on Tuesday, May 12, 2020. The NJIT men's cross country, women's tennis and women's volleyball programs all had scores in the top 10 percent of their respective sport.
