New Jersey Innovation Institute Launches AI Lab and Multi-Pronged AI Strategy
New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII) announced today the NJII AI Lab, focused on solving the adoption challenges for today’s business leader. This program supports the assessment, identification, design and implementation of AI solutions to meet the needs of small and medium-sized businesses. The AI solutions-as-a-service model leverages subject matter experts within both NJII and NJIT, as well as students from NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing, which is the largest computer science program in the tristate area.
“As part of our 2030 Strategic Plan for NJIT, we are focused on providing 100% of our students with an experiential learning opportunity and we are excited about the prospect of launching this AI initiative through NJII which provides our students with this opportunity while supporting New Jersey businesses,” described NJIT Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs John Pelesko.
The initiative will be led by NJII Associate Vice President Thomas Villani who is an expert in building real-world artificial intelligence and machine learning applications. Villani was previously the chief science officer and co-founder of Visikol where he led the development of various cutting-edge image analysis and bioimaging solutions as well as leading research projects for all twenty of the top twenty pharmaceutical companies in the world.
The launch of this new AI Lab is part of NJII’s three-pronged approach to AI which includes collaboration with NJIT's AI initiative, education and upskilling through the Learning and Development Initiative and company creation through the forthcoming NJII Venture Studio.
“This comprehensive AI strategy leverages the unique assets of NJII and NJIT to drive AI innovations and positions New Jersey as a leader in the AI field,” described NJII President Michael Johnson.
