Men's Fencing Goes Undefeated at Eric Sollee MIT Fencing Invitational, Women Finish 4-2
The NJIT men's fencing team went undefeated at the Eric Sollee MIT Fencing Invitational while the NJIT women went 4-2 Sunday afternoon.
The NJIT men, winners of seven straight, move to 13-5 overall on the season while the NJIT women, put together a strong performance, stand at 8-6 on the year.
The NJIT men went undefeated against: Haverford (18-9), Hunter (24-3), Boston Collge (W, 18-9), MIT (15-12) and Brandies (18-9) while the women defeated Haverford (19-8), Hunter (24-2), MIT (14-13) and Brandies (15-12).
Sophomore Dominic Heise combined for a 12-6 overall record on the foil strip – picking up a pair of wins against Haverford, MIT, Brandies and Brown while sweeping Hunter. On the season, Heise is 25-10.
Senior Nicholas Concepcion posted nine wins while Chris Saulys added seven wins on the foil strip for the Highlanders. Saulys season record mark stands at 27-18 while Concepcion is 20-17 overall.
Sophomore Brett Bogert notched nine wins on the epee strip for the Highlanders while freshman Rourke Hillyer posted an 11-1 mark, sweeping Haverford, Hunter, Boston College and adding two wins against Brandies. Classmate Robert Hondor registered 14 wins on the day, sweeping, Hunter, Boston College, MIT and picking up a pair of wins against Haverford and Brandies.
Junior Thomas Slawinski paced the Highlanders on the saber strip, posting an 11-7 overall record followed by Greg Puccio with a 10-2 record.
On the women's side, Cristina Garcia Mendicino led the foil squad, notching a 15-3 overall record, sweeping Haverford, Hunter, Boston College and Brown.
Freshman Paloma Almodovar recorded a 14-4 overall mark with 3-0 victories over Harverford, Hunter, MIT.
Freshman Marina Arrese led the epee squad with a 16-2 overall mark. Arrese went 3-0 against Haverford, Hunter, MIT and notched a pair of wins against Boston College and Brown. The newcomer from Madrid, Spain holds a 35-6 overall record on the season.
Senior Maria Sztan notched 10 wins for the Highlanders, going 3-0 against Haverford and Brandeis while adding two wins apiece against MIT and Brown.
The NJIT men will return to action February 10 at 8 a.m. when the Highlanders compete in the MACFA B round robin in Hoboken, NJ, hosted by Stevens.
The NJIT women will host its annual NJIT Invitational February 9 at 10 a.m.
