Martin Tuchman School of Management at TEDxNJIT
TEDxNJIT aims to bring innovation and remarkable people together to share a TED-like experience in Newark. This year’s event was all about stories of resilience from guest speakers of all different backgrounds, including the following members of Martin Tuchman School of Management (MTSM).
Tomi Antoljak
Tomi Antoljak is vice president of MTSM’s Investment Club and an international student-athlete undegrad at NJIT, where he came in on a tennis scholarship as the 535th-ranked junior tennis player in the world. During his studies, he has completed several internships, including in investment banking for Deloitte, strategic development for Rimac Automobili and financial technology analysis at Royal Bank of Canada. In his free time, he loves reading books about investing, psychology and evolution.
His message on resilience: “Building resilience requires practice. Stoicism gives us practical exercises — practice discomfort, meditate on your mortality and train your perception”
Cesar Bandera
Cesar Bandera is an associate professor of entrepreneurship at MTSM, where he teaches the formation and growth of technology startups. Bandera also has two companies in NJIT’s VentureLink business incubator that specialize in mobile learning services.
His message on resilience: “The expression ‘no person is an island’ applies even more to entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurship offers self-realization, but going it alone all but ensures failure. Even being immersed in a vibrant environment will not help the entrepreneur if he/she does not engage it. To be resilient, given all the uncertainties of entrepreneurship, engage your social capital — do not just collect it — and be a communal entrepreneur that enables those around you to likewise be successful.”
Judith Sheft and Michael Ehrlich
Judith Sheft is the associate vice president of strategic relationshisp and external affairs at NJIT, as well as chairwoman of the Greater Newark Enterprises Corporation, where she provides leadership, vision and direction to ensure success for her clients.
Her message on resilience: “Resilience can be thought about from various perspectives. How can I as an individual become more resilient, how can we make our communities more resilient and, as a society, how can we put in place processes and systems to make the world more resilient? This year’s program explored all these dimensions and it is our hope that the audience was inspired to implement new ideas to increase their resilience on multiple dimensions.”
Michael Ehrlich is an associate professor of finance with a current research focus on the commercialization of technology and new venture finance. He loves TED talks and this is his 9th TEDxNJIT event as a producer.
His message on resilience: “Getting started is hard, but bouncing back from unexpected challenges is required for successful people, organizations and communities. We hope that others will watch these TEDxNJIT videos and gain the resilience they need to be successful.”
