Getting the Lead out of Newark's Drinking Water
Monday, February 3, 2020
As Newark races to replace thousands of lead-based pipes that feed drinking water into homes, the city faces another urgent challenge: stopping the heavy metal from leaching into the water supply while the massive remediation effort is underway. And that’s where NJIT’s environmental engineers come in. To mitigate exposure over the life of the project, which is expected to take up to 30 months, a research team is working with the city to develop and test chemical methods to prevent lead-shedding corrosion in as many as 18,000 service lines that stretch from the water main located under...
Technology Forecast: Atam Dhawan Sets 10 Goalposts for the 2020s
Wednesday, January 29, 2020
*As previously published in the Star-Ledger and nj.com As our civilization evolves, so do our expectations of technology. Together, they demonstrate how dramatic advances in robots, nanotechnology-enabled sensors and high-powered computing will continue to change and evolve our society. Importantly, many of these technologies, including smart robots, point-of-care devices and machine intelligence, will empower individuals to enjoy their lives more purposefully. Here is my list of new goalposts for the next decade in three spheres: health care, environmental sustainability and technology...

Engineering Prof. Misra Named IEEE Fellow, Stops Transistors From Leaking Energy
Tuesday, January 21, 2020
Durgamadhab Misra is the newest member of NJIT's Newark College of Engineering to become a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Misra won the prestigious award for his ongoing research on preventing transistors from leaking electrons. Every time a transistor leaks an electron, it wastes battery life or hurts performance. Specifically, Misra devoted the last 15 years of his career to studying the reliability of what engineers call high-k dielectrics. The term refers to a material's dielectric constant, which is a measure of its ability to insulate...
