Book from NJIT Professor Explores the Pros and Cons of Nanotechnology
Wednesday, January 25, 2023
The latest book from NJIT’s Chaudhery Mustansar Hussain captures the dichotomy of nanotechnology: it facilitates everything from the delivery of medicine and sunblock to the development of smart phones and filtration of wastewater but also produces tiny particles that are invisible to the eye and therefore can easily be absorbed by soil or humans. What’s more, research into the potential toxicity of the particles lags the explosive growth of nanotech, with more than 240 related products now on the market. Such concerns fueled the development of Hussain’s book, Environmental, Ethical and...
Science in the Pursuit of Justice: Center for Pre-College Programs Helps Generate STEM Interest
Tuesday, January 3, 2023
At NJIT’s annual STEM Leadership Forum, teachers, administrators and curriculum builders for elementary thru high school students attended to find out more about why forensic science has inspired so many students to pursue STEM degrees, and how they can incorporate it into their teachings. “It’s an altruistic field of study,” noted David Fisher, director of NJIT’s forensic science program and former expert criminalist with New York City’s Chief Medical Examiner. “Students want to do something meaningful. So if you can teach STEM in a meaningful way, it’s more likely you’re going to capture...
NJIT Researchers Awarded $620k Grant to Study Climate Change Impact of Soot
Friday, November 4, 2022
NJIT researchers have received a $620,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to advance our understanding of the way in which soot particles from combustion of fossil fuels are driving climate change in the Earth’s atmosphere. Associate Professor of Chemistry Alexei Khalizov and Associate Professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering Gennady Gor will lead the project, “A Multiscale Model for Restructuring of Atmospheric Soot Particles”. Researchers say the new three-year project aims to improve ways of describing soot nanoparticles in atmospheric models, while advancing...
NJ Research Institutions Host Symposium to Tackle Climate Change and Planetary, Human Health
Thursday, November 3, 2022
New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rutgers, Princeton and Stevens Institute of Technology joined to present respective research projects and explore potential areas of collaboration related to climate change, planetary and human health that would benefit the population of New Jersey and beyond. Environmental scientists, engineers, experts and government officials were invited to present and speak on a wide variety of subjects related to climate change ranging from nuclear winter and flood mitigation, to measuring community resilience and nanotechnology strategies for agriculture. Also in...

College of Science and Liberal Arts Reaches Diversity Milestone, Enrollment Records
Thursday, October 6, 2022
NJIT’s College of Science and Liberal Arts (CSLA) is reporting a milestone on the way to all-new fall enrollment records — the college now has more female students than male students for the first time in its 40-year history. CSLA’s fall enrollment total of nearly 1,200 students represents a new high-water mark for the second consecutive year, with female student population jumping from 46% to 53% of the college’s total student population in that time, according to a report from NJIT’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness (OIE). “I am extremely proud of our Fall 2022 enrollment figures...
NJIT Researchers Unlock a New Method for Testing Protein-Based Drugs
Monday, September 26, 2022
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) researchers have unveiled a new lab technique they say represents a “paradigm shift” in how pharmaceutical laboratories test and produce new protein-based drugs, such as therapeutic monoclonal antibodies being developed to treat a variety of diseases, from cancers to infectious diseases. Researchers say their electrochemistry-based approach, described in the journal Analytical Chemistry, could allow for safety and quality testing of up-and-coming biotherapeutics to be done at a fraction of the time required by conventional...

NJIT Honors Scholar Pursues PhD in Bioengineering at UMD
Wednesday, July 13, 2022
Next up for NJIT biomedical engineering graduate Amal Shabazz: the Ph.D. program in bioengineering at the University of Maryland. But first, the Albert Dorman Honors Scholar has a 10-week summer internship at Pfizer in Andover, Mass. Her four years in University Heights were filled with helpful mentors, key internships and welcoming peer groups that collectively helped opened the door to graduate school. In an interview, she shares what she gained and where she hopes it leads. What first sparked your interest in biomedical engineering? I was always torn between studying medicine or...
NJIT Hosts NJ's First Forensic Science Education Conference
Thursday, July 7, 2022
While shows such as CSI and Dexter have made the world of forensic science a hit on television, the field is also quickly become a hit in classrooms as well, evidenced by the recent turnout at NJIT for the first-ever Forensic Science Education Conference held in New Jersey. Teachers from around the U.S. recently convened to explore new ways to engage their students in STEM learning through the lens of forensic science at the conference, hosted Jun. 27-29 through a collaboration between NJIT’s Center for Pre-college Programs (CPCP), College of...
