Some industrial processes seem to resist optimization. Filters impervious to the slings and arrows of accumulated “gunk” – the particles, minerals and organic buildup that foul water treatment facilities, nuclear power plants and even breweries – are prime among them.

And that’s where the mathematicians come in.

Paulette Salomon distinctly recalls April of 2016 as a critical point in her school district’s journey to provide the right digital learning resources and opportunities to the students of East Orange, New Jersey — a district where she has been an educator for 22 years, and has served as the educational technology supervisor to approximately 600 teachers and 10,000 students since 2010.

The Murray Center for Women in Technology at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) will hold a one-day Women Designing the Future conference—“The Environment: Doing More with Less”—on Friday, March 23. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in the university’s Campus Center Ballrooms A and B.

In February, more than 300 educators, superintendents, technology advisors and engaged citizens from districts throughout New Jersey convened at NJIT to promote digital education at the 2018 Future Ready Schools New Jersey (FRS-NJ) North Regional Certification Summit.

Five NJIT students —  Ivan Mitevski, Kiera Nissen, Omar Qari, Priya Rajbabu and Michael Vitti — have been named 2018 Governor’s STEM Scholars, an honor that is providing them with unique opportunities to learn from and network with New Jersey STEM professionals, research organizations, academic institutions and state policymakers. They join their fellow scholars from universities, high schools and academies throughout New Jersey in attending STEM conferences and field trips, and in participating in a team-based research project.

The Rutgers-Newark/NJIT Theatre and Arts Technology program presents “In the Heights”, a Tony Award- winning musical with lyrics by Lin Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegria Hudes and directed by Michael Kerley, associate director of the theatre program.

On the third floor of Fenster Hall, visitors can find a rich collection of landmark science and engineering artifacts that resemble a technological time capsule of the past 100 years. The iconic 1984 Apple Macintosh Plus, a 1950s suitcase-type Geiger counter, a 1954 wood-encased Seederer-Kohlbusch scale and 1947 Bausch & Lomb optical microscope — all historical scientific equipment once used at NJIT that is now being protected and displayed as part of university’s growing museum project, called the “NJIT Distributed Technology Museum.”
