NJIT's Mitra Deploys Nanoscopic Virus Killers in the Fight Against COVID-19
Monday, June 15, 2020
As medical researchers race to develop a vaccine for the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, an NJIT scientist who specializes in nanomaterials is developing new methods to slow its spread in the environment. Backed by a grant from the National Science Foundation, Somenath Mitra, director of the university’s Otto York Center for Environmental Engineering and Science, seeks to embed antiviral agents in a range of wearable gear and filtration systems, from personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks and gowns, to air and water filters at healthcare facilities. His engineered agents would be...
At NJIT's 104th Commencement, Class of 2020 Urged to Make an Impact
Friday, June 12, 2020
“It is an unusual graduation, but what is extraordinary always is the work of this class,” said U.S. Sen. Cory Booker HON ’09, who began NJIT’s 104th Commencement with a pre-ceremony heartfelt greeting thanking the university’s 2020 graduates for their grit, hard work, sacrifice and struggle, and for epitomizing what “Jersey Strong” is all about. The senator’s message of congratulations was one of many during the June 12 ceremony, held virtually this year as the world continues to face disruption and devastation caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Sen. Booker shared a meaningful story with...
Senior Success: Samantha Lomuscio, Cosmic Gamma-Ray Hunter
Monday, June 8, 2020
Exploring remote, exotic locations is a long-standing tradition among college students. For applied physics major Samantha Lomuscio ’20, that destination during her senior year has been Jupiter, nearly 390 million miles away. Working with astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), where she began conducting high-energy astrophysics research last summer, her goal has been to detect the solar system’s largest planet in a way that has never been done successfully — through gamma-ray emissions. With a billion times the energy of visible light, these emissions can...

First-year students applying to New Jersey Institute of Technology for entry in the Fall of 2021 and Spring of 2022 can choose to not submit SAT or ACT scores. Deek, provost and senior executive vice president. NJIT’s...
NJIT Researchers Develop Easier and Faster Way to Quantify, Explore Therapeutic Proteins
Wednesday, June 3, 2020
Researchers at New Jersey Institute of Technology in collaboration with Ohio University and Merck & Co. Inc. recently developed a new efficient method for targeted protein analysis — one they say could speed up processes for disease testing, drug discovery and vaccine development. The research, published in the journal Analytical Chemistry, highlights the team’s new coulometric mass spectrometric (CMS) approach for determining the quantity of proteins in biological samples, potentially opening new doors for exploring proteins in the human body that may only be expressed at...
