Senior Success: Published Researcher Marcos Molina to Pursue PhD at Princeton
Wednesday, May 18, 2022
Marcos Molina, a chemical engineer with a penchant for complicated algorithms, made a tough call when deciding among Ph.D. programs at several graduate Ivy League institutions. In the end, he chose to pursue theoretical and computational research at Princeton. “It allows me to be closer to family and friends, and I enjoyed the atmosphere when I visited,” said Molina, who has been a star researcher in Professor Gennady Gor’s research laboratory. Gor recognized his potential even as a first-year student and Molina hit the ground running. His very first project led to what student...
Students Earn High Marks in a Return to Engineering Competitions
Tuesday, May 10, 2022
Students from NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering have earned first, second and third place recognitions across steel bridge, chemical car and concrete canoe events held for inter-institutional competition. The steel bridge regional competition made its return for the first time since COVID restrictions canceled the event in 2020 and 2021, and NJIT took home first place in the Metropolitan Region in the Construction Speed and Stiffness categories. Team members include Kayden Bevando, Pedro Bandeira, Michael Brusca, Diego Cabrera, Vincent Campanella, Joel Florim, Thomas Hickey,...
ROI-NJ Features NJIT Leaders in Technology Influencer List
Thursday, April 28, 2022
Business publication ROI-NJ included several NJIT executives and faculty among its annual list of New Jersey's top technology influencers. "Innovating: If your company isn’t doing it, it probably will not be around for very long," the publication stated. "Our goal was to select those who are having the most impact in the technology and innovation sectors. … We’re overwhelmed with the quality of honorees on the list — and humbled to know that there are many others out there deserving of the recognition." The editors selected President Joel S. Bloom as the fourth-most influential...
Leader of the House Sees STEM in Action at NJIT
Thursday, April 28, 2022
The Assistant Speaker of the House of Representatives visited New Jersey Institute of Technology to get a closer look at how STEM education and research fuels the economic mobility of the city, region and country. U.S. Rep. Katherine Clark, D-MA-05, toured NJIT’s Makerspace — the largest in the state — and heard from the university’s president-elect, senior vice provost of research, deans and representatives of its engineering and business schools, and its director of experiential learning. Collectively, they explained how a blend of STEM education, research and entrepreneurship primes...
New NJIT-Led Center Wins Pharma Backing to Improve Drug Design, Shorten Development Times
Thursday, April 7, 2022
Swallowing a pill is simple. Developing one the body will absorb into the bloodstream and deliver to the precise location, at the right concentration and in the optimal sequence is complex. The vast majority of pills are composed of powders, materials with properties of both solids and liquids, and they are tricky to design and manufacture because of their sometimes unpredictable behaviors. “Drugmakers face a number of fundamental problems,” says Rajesh Davé, a distinguished professor of chemical and materials engineering at NJIT who specializes in particle design. “Most drug molecules in...
The Hylander Requiem Motors for Glory Before a Hometown Crowd
Tuesday, April 5, 2022
The Hylander Requiem, a technology-filled cart atop mini monster wheels that is powered by self-generated hydrogen, will attempt to motor to victory this weekend at the regional round of the annual Chem-E-Car Competition. This year, Highlander Nation will be cheering loudly – and collectively – as the NJIT roadster competes against 14 other teams, including Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania, on the NJIT campus, the host of the 2022 American Institute of Chemical Engineers mid-Atlantic Student Conference. The Hylander, which the team describes affectionately as “...
NJIT Ranked Top 100 Engineering Grad School by US News & World Report
Tuesday, March 29, 2022
U.S. News & World Report has released its 2023 rankings for the nation’s top graduate schools, with NJIT ranked among the best for graduate degree programs in engineering. The university slots in this year at No. 86 — up two positions from the prior year and 25 positions in the past eight years — and has been included on the distinguished list since 2003. The 2023 rankings mark the seventh consecutive year NJIT has appeared in the top 100. NJIT’s Newark College of Engineering (NCE), which has been providing engineering education for over 100 years, offers more than 30 master’s and Ph.D...
NJ Congresswoman Speaks at Opening of 'Cutting-Edge' Celluloid Plant
Monday, February 28, 2022
U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill recognizes the value of a new pilot plant in her New Jersey district that will modernize munitions development through the production of foamable celluloid. The 16,000-square-foot plant in Fairfield, N.J. is run by the Polymer Processing Institute (PPI), which is based on the campus of New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark. PPI and NJIT are partners in the Joint Munitions Manufacturing Technology Group (JMMTG) that also includes the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center, based at Picatinny Arsenal. Through new processes...
Two NJIT "Rising Stars" are Named Senior Members of the National Academy of Inventors
Tuesday, February 22, 2022
Murat Guvendiren, a chemical and materials engineer who designs biomaterials that train stem cells to differentiate in the proper sequence to form functioning organs and tissues, and Mengyan Li, a microbiologist who develops sustainable water remediation techniques to biodegrade persistent industrial pollutants, have been named senior members of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Guvendiren and Li are among 83 researchers from 41 NAI member institutions and research universities named to the class of 2022. Collectively, the new members are named on 1093 issued U.S. patents. "Today...
Chemical Engineering Solves Problems with Computer Simulation
Tuesday, February 8, 2022
Gennady Gor is becoming a go-to expert at combining the power of chemistry and computers to protect our bodies. Gor's specialty is molecular simulation of fluids and their interactions with porous materials. "I am interested in coupling between surface chemistry and mechanics. This is the main focus of my NSF Career Award from 2020," he explained. In addition to his teaching role as an assistant professor in the Otto York Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering, Gor has two new grant-funded research projects. One, from Colgate-Palmolive, is to evaluate how certain toothpastes...
