The NJIT women's tennis team's magical run through its first Southland Conference Tournament came to a close Sunday afternoon as the No. 3 seed Highlanders were defeated by No. 2 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-1, in the Southland Championship match.
NJIT concludes its season with a 12-8 overall record after the program's deepest postseason run since 2012.
Like the first two matches of the tournament, the Highlanders found themselves trailing after conceding the doubles point but were unable to strike first in singles to tie up the match. Aya El Sayed's win at No. 1 cut the Islanders' lead to 2-1 - the same deficit after three points NJIT faced in the semifinal against No. 1 seed Northwestern State - but Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was able to finish their No. 6 and 3 flights to claim the conference title.
Nonetheless, the Highlanders wrap up its first season in its new league home with an outstanding resume':
12+ wins for the first time since 2018-19
Four Highlanders on the Southland All-Conference teams
A first-time Power Five conference victory over Rutgers (5-2 on January 28)
Three separate three-match winning streaks during the year.
