Algorithms Expert is First Woman at NJIT to Become IEEE Fellow
Friday, December 17, 2021
Guiling (Grace) Wang, professor and associate dean for research in Ying Wu College of Computing, was recently named an IEEE Fellow, one of the electronic technology industry's highest honors. She is the first woman to earn the honor among several male recipients at NJIT and only the second current honoree in the computing college. Most recipients are based in Newark College of Engineering, given the IEEE's focus on electrical engineering. Wang received the award for her work on distributed algorithms. She's focused on making sure the algorithms retain data quality, fault tolerance and...
WiFi and Light-Based Networks Combine for Better Virtual Reality Systems
Thursday, December 9, 2021
"Why not both?" is a social media meme, but it's also the proposed answer to a problem for the designers of virtual reality systems, who generally must rely on wireless signals that are reliable but not as fast as needed. It's already hard enough to make virtual reality look realistic, without choppiness or delays, when a user is sitting still and plugged into a wired network, NJIT Associate Professor Jacob Chakareski explained. But making a system that's wireless, adding multiple users and incorporating six degrees of freedom — where a person controls the pitch, roll and yaw of their head...
Computing College Expands Job Options in 'Early Access to Talent' Program
Monday, December 6, 2021
NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing is matching top tech talent from its student ranks with companies needing to remain ahead of the curve in a competitive marketplace, in a new initiative called Early Access to Talent. The pre-employment program offers companies the opportunity to cultivate a custom candidate pool according to their specific recruiting objectives among students pursuing an M.S. degree in any area of computer and information technology offered through the college. Corporate stakeholders will sponsor students' tuition, fees and a modest stipend. In exchange, the student...

Julie Ancis Appointed Interim Chair of Dept. of Informatics in Ying Wu College of Computing
Friday, December 3, 2021
The Ying Wu College of Computing is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Julie Ancis, as interim chair of the department of Informatics, commencing December 1, 2021. Ancis joined the department this Fall from NJIT’s College of Science and Liberal Arts where she launched the new Cyberpsychology degree program. Her expertise at the intersection of psychology, diversity, computing, and technology will serve her well in her new role leading a department which deals with, among other topics, the interaction between technology and its uses and users. Ancis succeeds Dr. Frank Biocca, who...
New Computer Science Elective Examines the History of Computing
Tuesday, November 23, 2021
A new course about the history of information systems will be offered by Ying Wu College of Computing this spring, where students will learn about everything from calculation methods of ancient and medieval times, through early visions of mechanical computer architecture in the Industrial Age, straight through to the pioneers of 20th-century solid-state electronics and digital networks. By studying history, students will gain a broader context of modern computing and will be better prepared to understand and make informed decisions in their careers as software developers, system...
Freshman Wins Top Prize at HackNJIT, Zoo Theme Leads to Productive Apps
Monday, November 22, 2021
Students who developed software for game animation, package delivery, lecture transcription and wildlife sightings were all winners at HackNJIT this month. The event was almost back to normal this year, being in-person for NJIT students — complete with midnight snacks and impromptu 1:00 a.m. karaoke — and online for external entrants, unlike last year's hackathon which was fully virtual because of the COVID pandemic. Hackathon organizers encouraged participants to develop projects with an animal theme. Most participants obliged, including overall winner Andrew Gyakobo, an NJIT freshman...
Streaming Data Analytics Has New Method Planned by NJIT, USC, Harvard
Monday, November 1, 2021
E-commerce sites, military planners and streaming media providers all want to analyze multiple sources of live data as quickly as possible, a holy grail of data science which is about to become possible through new software called StreamWare, from researchers at Harvard University, New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Southern California. "What we're trying to do is reimagine data science," said David Bader, distinguished professor and director of NJIT's Institute for Data Science. Bader, along with Harvard professor David Brooks and USC Viterbi School of Engineering...

Experts at NJIT's New AI Research Center to Study Theory and Applications
Friday, October 1, 2021
Members of NJIT's new Center for Artificial Intelligence Research will look to expand knowledge of the theory, data and applications of their field, which director Grace Wang said is quickly evolving from experimental to practical status. The center will rely heavily on external grants, such as from the National Science Foundation which devoted $868 million to artificial intelligence research this year. Degree offerings will include an M.S. in artificial intelligence, most likely starting in fall 2022, building on existing courses such as CS-677, Deep Learning, which has been offered since...
