SIGCHI Design Jam Showcases the Fruits of Mixing Computing with Creativity
Friday, March 14, 2025
The annual SIGCHI (Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction) Design Jam happened during an inspired nine-hour designathon beginning on Saturday, March 8 at 9 a.m. and finishing at 1 p.m. the following day. The event invites students studying human-computer interaction, digital design, web and information systems and cyberpsychology to form teams of four to create an interactive prototype (Figma, front-end code, paper prototype, etc.) that will solve a real user problem. The beginner-friendly UX hackathon-style happening is a collaboration between Ying Wu College of Computing (...
Gender's Role in Climate Change, AI Highlighted at NJIT Women's Tech Conference
Thursday, March 13, 2025
A keynote speaker at NJIT’s Women Designing the Future conference explained the imperative for holistic approaches to climate change policy, while another shared her tale of breaking through glass ceilings to develop innovative artificial intelligence software. The speakers — Rhiana Gunn-Wright, who orchestrated behind-the-scenes policymaking for the 2019 Green New Deal, and Danielle Feinberg, visual effects supervisor at Pixar — were on campus March 7 to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of the NJIT Murray Center for Women in Technology, and also for Women’s History Month. “We had...

Monday, March 10, 2025
Assistant Professor Zhihao "Zephyr" Yao of the Department of Computer Science at NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing has been named among IEEE Computing’s Top Early Career Professionals. This prestigious recognition is awarded to individuals worldwide who have demonstrated exceptional early-career achievements and are actively shaping the future of technology in the fields of artificial intelligence, software engineering and hardware. Professor Yao's research on enhancing trust and security within mobile systems has been recognized as a significant contribution to the development...
Fruit Fly Research Led NJIT Scientists and Edison Teens to Better AI Habits on Supercomputers
Monday, March 3, 2025
A competition to compare the brains of male vs. female fruit flies led New Jersey Institute of Technology researchers and two high school students to a second-place finish in the latest edition of the FlyWire Data Challenge, but more importantly the team learned new lessons about using artificial intelligence for setting up research with supercomputers. In the challenge, hosted earlier this year by Princeton University’s Neuroscience Institute, teams had to create efficient maps of the 19,000 synapse connections between neurons in tiny insect brains. The maps take the form of graphs, and...
Expanding Housing: NJIT's Rebuild of Oak Hall Will More Than Double Its Beds
Wednesday, February 26, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology is rebuilding its second oldest residence hall to meet a burgeoning demand for housing at the growing public university. The new Oak Hall on Summit Street in Newark will contain 453 beds in 154 units — more than double the current totals. The units will take the form of apartments for either two or four students, complete with kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms. There will also be single units for resident assistants. The 15-story building will also feature an array of common areas, including a lounge for studying, a game room, conference rooms for...
An AI Class That is Exclusive and Needed Now More Than Ever
Monday, February 24, 2025
A famous movie quote included the phrase, “…what I do have are a very particular set of skills.” The same can be said by Associate Professor Andrew Sohn in Ying Wu College of Computing’s (YWCC) department of computer science, whose course, CS 485: Intro to GPU Cluster Programming, may well be – technically - a class like no other in the U.S. due to his work with NASA, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, as well as his venture capital-backed startup company in Silicon Valley. According to Sohn, there are some schools teaching GPU (graphics processing unit) courses, which involve...
Tech Can Help People Living with Dementia to Help Themselves, NJIT Expert Says
Tuesday, February 18, 2025
People with mild dementia might live more independently if assistive technology could evolve in parallel with their progressing conditions, according to new research from Alisha Pradhan, assistant professor of informatics at New Jersey Institute of Technology. Pradhan and Clemson University assistant professor Emma Dixon are principal investigators on a three-year National Science Foundation grant, Future Proofing for Age-Related Changing Cognitive Abilities using Smart Objects as Assistive Technologies, with each school receiving $300,000. “When we think about dementia, we just think...
NJIT's Grace Hopper AI Research Institute Launches with $1 Million in Research Proposals
Monday, February 17, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has taken a significant step in its commitment to advancing artificial intelligence by establishing the Grace Hopper AI Research Institute (GHRI). The institute is a key component of NJIT's $10 million AI Initiative aimed at enhancing the university's capabilities in AI research and applications. In its inaugural call for research proposals, GHRI received more than $1 million in funding requests. These proposals span a diverse range of departments and fields, including engineering, computer science, mathematics and university operations. This...
NJIT Maintains Highest Research Classification, Renews its R1 Status from Carnegie
Thursday, February 13, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has once again earned the prestigious R1 designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, reaffirming its standing as a top-tier doctoral university with very high research activity. This continued recognition reflects NJIT’s commitment to cutting-edge research, innovation and the advancement of knowledge. NJIT has demonstrated significant growth in key research metrics that contribute to the R1 designation. The university’s research expenditures have reached $165 million based on the Carnegie-measured three-year...
3D Wound Tracking System Wins Best Innovation Award at Health Care Technology Conference
Thursday, January 30, 2025
A new 360-degree perspective on wound care has already attracted attention from the health care industry, and Assistant Professor Salam Daher and Dahlia Musa Ph.D. ’25 from NJIT's Ying Wu College of Computing have a goal to further develop a 3D graphics simulation tool to patent it for commercial use. Their submission to “Simventors” (short for simulation inventors) to demonstrate a "System to Visualize, Measure, and Track Simulated Wounds in 3D" recently won the Best Innovation Award at the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) 2025 in Orlando, Florida. The work...
