Game Jam Brings Design Skills to Techies, Tech Skills to Designers
Tuesday, February 9, 2021
Students who study computing teamed with those in digital design from Jan. 29-31 at Global Game Jam, a hackathon for video game development, which was virtual this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. About three dozen entrants spanning five teams completed the challenge to finish a game in 48 hours, with some teams also including alumni and students from other universities, said Julian Quinn, the lead event organizer, who is a junior information technology major in Ying Wu College of Computing. "It's programming for the fun of it, just showing off what you can make," Quinn...
Computing Professor Makes Artificial Intelligence More Reliable
Monday, February 1, 2021
Artificial intelligence software used in everything from cancer research to vehicle navigation sometimes relies on unreliable data-sorting algorithms that can lead to serious real-world problems, but an NJIT expert is working on new ways to identify the causes and find possible solutions. Many of the popular algorithms for data sorting, also known as clustering, are vital to how AI operates but can yield responses that are quite inconsistent — so if the algorithms can't be trusted, then nor can the sorting and the final answer, explained Iulian Neamtiu, a professor of computer science at...
College of Computing Industrial Affiliates Program Continues to Impact the Corporate World
Friday, January 29, 2021
When companies want to address important challenges and opportunities that would benefit from computing expertise, they look to the Industrial Affiliate Program (IAP) at the NJIT Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC). Such was the case for global, diversified media, information and services company Hearst. Looking to transform how its magazine group packages and presents data, Hearst took advantage of its IAP membership and was connected with NJIT Assistant Professor Aritra Dasgupta, an expert in the field of visual analytics and data visualization. Working closely with the company...
ACM Chapter and Computing College Partner for Online Tutoring
Friday, January 29, 2021
NJIT's student ACM chapter is known for its tutoring center, which is moving online this semester in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, matching the new way that university instruction is provided. The program, designed in conjunction with Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC), , matches student volunteers with those who need assistance via WebEx sessions. Tutoring for the spring 2021 semester covers 29 undergraduate and 16 graduate-level courses. There are 28 tutors, 17 of which are volunteers from Albert Dorman Honors College who are fulfilling their service requirements. Faculty...
U.S. News & World Report Commends NJIT Online Graduate Programs
Wednesday, January 27, 2021
Four of NJIT's online graduate programs placed among the top 100 in this year's U.S. News & World Report rankings of American universities. While studying online became an important academic offering in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NJIT has long offered both fully online and partial, or hybrid, online degree programs as part of the university’s vision of a global campus. The publication ranked Highlander online master's degrees 27th-best for information technology, 56th for engineering, 91st for business generally and 100th for the Master's of Business Administration...
Computing Sophomore Wins Application Developer Pitch Competition
Tuesday, January 12, 2021
Vrushti Dalal, an Albert Dorman Honors College and computer science student from Sayreville, won the new University Innovation Challenge, a pitch-style competition sponsored by the Guardian Life Insurance Company. For young entrepreneurs, pitch competitions are a popular way to present concepts, hone essential business skills and make industry connections, which can help transform their creativity and talent into viable, real-world business ventures. Winners in two categories – developer and non-developer – received a paid 10-week summer internship with Guardian’s Enterprise Business...
Virtual Reality Helps Train Low-Vision Patients for Real-World Situations
Tuesday, January 12, 2021
People who have low vision — those who have difficulty seeing even when wearing corrective lens, according to American Foundation for the Blind — may soon be able to learn basic skills such as crossing the street or learning their way around by simulating the experience through a new application of virtual reality, which is being designed by NJIT Associate Professor Jacob Chakareski and his students. VR software, displayed to patients through goggles so the screens are directly in front of their eyes, could be prescribed by medical professionals called certified orientation and mobility...
NJIT@JerseyCity Celebrates First Graduates of M.S. in Data Science Program
Wednesday, December 23, 2020
NJIT @JerseyCity celebrated the graduation of its first group of master’s students, with four students earning their Master of Science in Data Science at the end of the fall semester this week. While a typical part-time M.S. program takes five semesters to complete, including a full summer semester, these students raced ahead to complete the program in just four semesters. NJIT @JerseyCity is a state-of-the-art learning space on the Jersey City waterfront. It was launched last fall by NJIT’s Ying Wu College of Computing (YWCC). The location, featuring sweeping views of the Manhattan...

NJIT Researchers Help Prevent Cyberattacks From Software Supply Chain
Tuesday, December 22, 2020
An open-source tool that cryptographically protects the layout of your software code supply chain is now available from researchers at NJIT, New York University and Purdue University, bolstering the type of weakness exploited in the recent cyberattack on the commercial SolarWinds monitoring application used by the U.S. government. The new tool, called in-toto, was developed by NJIT Professor Reza Curtmola, NYU Associate Professor Justin Cappos and Purdue Assistant Professor Santiago Torres-Arias. Now in version 1.0, it focuses on safeguarding the steps to design, develop and distribute...
