NJIT's Grace Hopper AI Research Institute Launches with $1 Million in Research Proposals
Monday, February 17, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has taken a significant step in its commitment to advancing artificial intelligence by establishing the Grace Hopper AI Research Institute (GHRI). The institute is a key component of NJIT's $10 million AI Initiative aimed at enhancing the university's capabilities in AI research and applications. In its inaugural call for research proposals, GHRI received more than $1 million in funding requests. These proposals span a diverse range of departments and fields, including engineering, computer science, mathematics and university operations. This...
NJIT Maintains Highest Research Classification, Renews its R1 Status from Carnegie
Thursday, February 13, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has once again earned the prestigious R1 designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, reaffirming its standing as a top-tier doctoral university with very high research activity. This continued recognition reflects NJIT’s commitment to cutting-edge research, innovation and the advancement of knowledge. NJIT has demonstrated significant growth in key research metrics that contribute to the R1 designation. The university’s research expenditures have reached $165 million based on the Carnegie-measured three-year...

Wednesday, February 12, 2025
Robert Cohen, president of Digital, Robotics, and Enabling Technology at Stryker, and a distinguished alumnus of New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), has been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering (NAE). This honor, one of the highest professional distinctions in engineering, recognizes Cohen's outstanding contributions to orthopedic surgical procedures and devices, and his leadership in additive manufacturing and biomaterials. Cohen's career has been marked by the pursuit of innovation, resulting in groundbreaking technologies that have impacted millions of...
NJIT Expert Wins NSF Career Award to Study Fluid-Solid Interaction
Monday, February 10, 2025
Engineers keep deriving new applications from research into what happens when solid objects interact with fluids such as gasses and liquids — it’s useful knowledge for aerospace, energy and healthcare — but new applications in turn require more research, in an endless cycle that may soon skip a few loops because of an NJIT professor’s improvements to the hottest software in his field. The software is called DualSPHysics. It was developed in the 2010s to simulate fluid flows using particle methods, which considers fluids as theoretical gatherings of tiny particles that move and act on each...
NJIT Engineer Tara Alvarez Wins First Place in an International Patent Competition
Friday, January 31, 2025
Tara Alvarez, a distinguished professor of biomedical engineering at NJIT, won first place in the inaugural Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU) / National Academy of Inventors (NAI) International Patent Award competition. Her patented technology, branded as VERVE (Virtual Eye Rotation Vision Exercises), is a virtual reality game to correct an eye motor disorder called convergence insufficiency, in which the muscles that control eye movements do not coordinate to focus on near objects, to see them singly and clearly. Because each eye sees images separately, the person...
NJIT Online Programs Continue Rise in US News Top 100 Rankings
Tuesday, January 21, 2025
New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) has strengthened its position in online education, with three online graduate programs now ranking in U.S. News & World Report's Top 100 for 2025, up from two last year. Notably, NJIT's online master's in business (non-MBA) program jumped 35 places to No. 74 in the latest national rankings, released this week by U.S. News & World Report. NJIT rose six places to No. 55 in the new rankings’ “Best Online Master's in Engineering Programs” category for its range of online M.S. programs in disciplines such as electrical engineering, ...
Bias, Diversity and Truth in AI: NJIT Alum Sanmi Koyejo Advocates for Change
Tuesday, January 14, 2025
Artificial intelligence is transforming our world in ways that spark curiosity, excitement and concern. Sanmi Koyejo ’05, assistant professor of computer science at Stanford University and founder and president of Black in AI, explored its profound impact across various domains, addressing pressing questions about the technology’s societal implications. The conversation delved into the rise of AI in the public consciousness, the challenge of countering biases in automated systems, its potential to revolutionize health care and even its capacity to unlock mysteries of the human brain....
Urban Gardens Workshop at NJIT Advances Sustainability and Food Security
Tuesday, January 14, 2025
NJIT hosted a National Science Foundation-funded Research Coordination Network (RCN) workshop on Urban Food, Energy, and Water (Urban FEW) in November. The event brought together researchers, technologists, urban gardeners and policymakers to tackle urban challenges related to food, water and energy security. Organized by NJIT’s Roberto Rojas-Cessa and New York Institute of Technology’s Ziqian Dong (also an NJIT alum), the workshop aimed to foster connections between academia and community stakeholders in Newark and beyond. Highlights of the Workshop Speakers and participants...
Fulbright Scholar Anna Maria DiBrita Shares Her NJIT STEM Knowledge with Spain's Future
Thursday, January 9, 2025
Anna Maria DiBrita ’24 didn’t quite have the time to study abroad during her time pursuing her degree in biomedical engineering. The Albert Dorman Honors Scholar kept a full plate on campus — member of the Society of Female Engineers, ambassadorships for biomedical engineering and the Honors College, Orientation Fellow among others. But now, DiBrita has earned a Fulbright scholarship and is an English teaching assistant in Spain’s Canary Islands. Her mornings begin with a bus ride to her school in Telde. DiBrita assists and supports the students learning English. She’s there Mondays...
