Smoke- and Tobacco-Free Campus Initiative

Dear Highlanders,
We are pleased to announce the launch of the NJIT Smoke- and Tobacco-Free Campus Initiative. Over the next year, we will work together to make our campus completely smoke and tobacco-free by September 1, 2025. Our policy will prohibit all forms of smoking and tobacco use, including e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products.
By becoming a smoke- and tobacco-free campus, NJIT is taking a significant step towards creating a healthier environment for everyone to learn, live, and work. In doing so, we join 22 other smoke-free colleges and universities in New Jersey and over 2,500 nationwide, reinforcing NJIT’s dedication to wellness, sustainability, and inclusivity. This initiative will not only improve the well-being of our students, faculty, and staff but also will set a strong example for prioritizing health across our community.
The university-wide Smoke- and Tobacco-Free Policy will take effect on September 1, 2025, and will replace our current policy, which already prohibits smoking inside all NJIT buildings and within 25 feet of university-owned and operated structures. This new policy will extend the prohibition to all tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, vapes, hookah, and smokeless products like chewing tobacco.
To prepare for this transition, we will be offering a variety of educational events and resources to support our community. Please visit the Smoke Free NJIT webpage on the Campus Health & Wellness website to learn more and to access cessation resources, educational information and more.
Sincerely,
