Shyquan Gibbs Selected to the 2020 ASUN Winter Winners for Life Team
NJIT senior Shyquan Gibbs has been selected to the 2020 ASUN Conference Winter Winners for Life team the league office announced Thursday.
The team is comprised of one student-athlete from each of the nine institutions and honors those who display excellence on and off the playing surface.
A two-time captain for the Highlanders, Gibbs started every game this season to finish his career with 108 straight starts, the highest-active streak in the ASUN and 13th in the nation. In addition, Gibbs also set a program record for games played, finishing his career with 125 games played, narrowly passing fellow St. Anthony High School alumnus and former NJIT teammate Tim Coleman (123 games).
Gibbs was selected to the ASUN's All-Academic Team for the third time this season after completing his undergraduate degree in December and beginning his pursuit for a Master's Degree this spring.
The Hillside, NJ, native averaged 8.2 ppg this season, with his biggest basket coming in the final second at Cornell to lead the squad to their first victory of the season. The driving layup put NJIT ahead by one point with under a second to play and was selected as the #5 play on ESPN Sportscenter's Top 10 that evening.
Gibbs scored in double digits 12 times this season, with his season-high of 21 points coming in a road win at Co-Regular Season Champion North Florida. Gibbs' 21 points came on 9-of-12 shooting in the upset win.
In addition to his success in the classroom and on the basketball court, Gibbs has also made it a point to be a factor in the community, as well. Gibbs has joined fellow family members on the board of a non-profit organization called A Fight Against the Odds, which is geared towards building, developing and maintaining a positive relationship with the youth in the community.
The Winners for Life team honors a campus citizen that is respected as one who shares and/or demonstrates the ASUN Core Values: Education, Honesty, Student-Athlete Experience, Fairness, Health, Ambition, Respect, Diversity, Inclusion, Leadership, Responsibility, and Sportsmanship. To be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must have competed in the current academic year in an ASUN sponsored sport and be in good academic standing at his/her university.
