Brandon Peterson struck out six over seven innings of work while his offense erupted for 11 runs as NJIT completed a three-game sweep of UMBC on Sunday, 11-3.
How it Happened
After taking the lead in the second on an RBI groundout, UMBC charged ahead in the top of the third behind a pair of home runs. NJIT responded with three of its own in the bottom half, as Ty Sallie plated the first run of the frame on an RBI single. Andrew Eppinger followed two batters later with a single to right, but an error in right field allowed the tying run to score from first. Mason Wolf would then put NJIT ahead on a sacrifice fly to score Eppinger from third.
In the fourth, the Highlander bats broke out, scoring seven runs to put the game out of reach. Jaden Caballero started the rally with an RBI double to left field, with Campbell following by reaching on an error to allow another Highlander to cross the plate. The big hit of the inning came courtesy of Austin Francis, who laced a three-run double off the bottom of the wall in left field to give NJIT an 11-3 edge.
Peterson was excellent in his outing, only running into real trouble in the three-run third. His swing-and-miss pitches were working late in the outing, including striking out four straight batters between the fifth and sixth innings. After surrendering the second home run of his outing, Peterson retired the last 13 batters he faced.
